Before getting into the review, I do want to mention that sexual assault is threatened by a few characters (it is an empty threat but the fact remains) and the threat is mentioned repeatedly.

I’d heard from a lot of readers that Brigid Kemmerer’s other series wasn’t that great so I was hesitant to start this series from her. I never did read her other series but this first book in the new series was absolutely amazing. It has got all the best tropes in it (friends to enemies to lovers, touch her and you die, the guy having an emotional breakdown and she helps him, the equivalent of knife to the throat, political entrigue).

It was just an overall great book. A lot happened in this book and if the next book in the series continues on this way, I think this could become a fanatastic duology. If it becomes a trilogy, I fear that Kemmerer will stretch what little there is left and it will ruin the entire series. If that happens, then this book has just enough of a conclusion to ignore the subsequent books. This book is upper YA as it does have sexual themes and I would not be surprised if the next book is classified as NA (like that of Kingdom of the Wicked).
