I like the story, the cover is stellar, the unhinged woman theme is what kept me coming back for more. Initially I thought this was more centred on the ghost of the mother in-law, but somehow this is even more twisted. I'm reminded of Pearl a lot, because Abby starts off on the surface as a very sweet lady, whose obsessive love for her husband makes her do insane things.
A bit underwhelming, because I was waiting for something bigger to happen. Since I listened to this while in a depressive episode, it'll probably stick with me.
I thought this was a regular creepy story, but I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it was a sporror! And my very first, too.
This was just a delight. Dark, atmospheric, inspired largely by Scottish folklore, namely the witch Nicnevin, and rich with flora (fungi, to be specific, but I appreciated the descriptions about plants too). It was slow-paced but was so worth it.
Jess-Cooke also covers many moving themes, like the struggles of young girls impregnated without their consent, the stigma surrounding young single mothers, and the concept of a non-nuclear family. I appreciate the author's note, which I learned a lot from.
My review doesn't do it any justice, but this is definitely worth checking out.
I don't think I've ever been this creeped out by a book before. Spine-chilling, thrilling, insane. Everything I want in a book and more. This one will stick with me for a while.
