The mother character--Wendy--is just so intensely unlikable that it really made it difficult for me to engage fully with the storyline. I'm not sure if this is on purpose or simply an accident. I read somewhere that the reason we hate so many female characters in literature is because they're written by men. TBD whether she becomes less hateful as a character.
