to be clear, go read Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas , that was such a fun read
I’m kinda sad cuz this cute book is 👉🏻In Oregon (personal reasons why I enjoy that) 👉🏻The Peter Pan re write we all want 👉🏻 i loved cemetery Boys and cant wait for the second one 👉🏻 little gender role reversal - so cute when Peter asked Wendy why she was crying and wendy gets to be her own savior! 💖peter is a little older, hot and cute ooolala 👉🏻cool plot and concept ☹️And it’s boring. - it was slow. wendy too way to long to get on board which was realistic but not interesting ☹️ i would have liked it so much more if it was half the length cuz it was an interesting concept 💔Peter is not our trans icon we all need and Aiden Thomas would totally slay
Aiden Thomas clearly has a fondness for contemporary Ya fantasy but for that reason, I am out on this one. The whole magic of peter pan is the world, fun pirates, fairies, mermaids, lets take out the stereotyping of indigenous people. This is just set in the real contemporary world and the magic was zapped out :(( I recommend for ages >15 ish the other issue with this book is was it YA, was it middle grade, was it a fairy tale. the nostalgia, children's stories, and slow pace made it feel middle grade. The police investigation and light romance and trauma made it feel YA. I think i wanted Peter to be like Rofio, still battling pirates but just old enough to be cute and make me blush. honestly i would rather watch Hook which is sad le sigh
I DNF'd this book bu marked it as read cuz i wanted to leave a review. i skipped to the end though, that was pretty fun then really bad. on the whole my review is the basically the same as most the the other low ratings.
I really enjoyed this and recommend it. I was surprised by how much of the book was just Queer Antics though also time for emotion. For something called literary fiction and about the sudden death of a parent, there was a lot of times I laughed out loud and the ending wasn’t so terribly tragic like I expect with literary fiction.
I enjoyed the methods of storytelling, back and forth between past and present. It would make a fun movie. I found all the characters relatable in some way. I was impressed by the fact I didn’t hate the MC. So often MC’s are oblivious or lost in self pity and while this character had both of those things a lot of the time, I was still rooting for her and believe she is trying. Though yes sometimes she annoyed me!
The emotional parallels between the MC and her mother was my favorite part of this book.
This lost .25 for perpetuating ideas of painful penetration for first heterosexual experience for women
in chapter titled “August 26, 2017. MC is drunk and says some “well intentioned” transphobic things to a trans character. She later apologizes after she’s sober
Explicit and breif domestic abuse in the past, April 2, 1977
DNF’d after first chapter. Adorable story. Means juvenile so great for actual kids. I thought the stars and constellations magic was so cute. The writing was also adorable “melted like a marshmallow when he looked at me” and “I longed to play the noodly strings of the instrument” As a grown up I can’t do a whole book of that It was also a bit slow, a lot of fluff about an Auntie’s couches
I was really impressed with this book! Always love to hear stories about Rani Lakshmi. This book is beautifully written and very well crafted. The author has a deep knowledge not only of the history but the combat and war and politics. The majestic and rebellious world propelled me through the book. I also empathized with the MC’s emotions and challenges despite the romance always leaving me wanting more but it was a realistic depiction compared to the historical fantasy that I read more often
I will definitely be reading Michelle Moran again. The book was good all the way through
Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated
4.5
This is a fantasy book about feminism!
Yes for real I have never read another book like this and Nafiza Azad I love you so much foreverrr! This is so incredibly unique The story is about a group of young women who find each other because they have all survived sexist abuse of some kind. From this shared pain the literally have magic powers! I’ve only ever heard of something like this in various mythology. The way the story is told is amazing! It goes back and forth between the MC’s POV, plural first person as the group and memories in the form of poems for each woman.
The most compelling thing about this book and Azads writing in general is the emotional depth, landscapes and transformation. The time she takes to develop the emotions is so rich. Wow This would be my favorite fantasy if not my favorite book if there was just some plot tweaks. I would flip around a few plot points at the end, somethings need more development as well. I found this in Azad’s other books as well
Made Azad one of my all time favorite authors. I can’t emphasize enough the impact this book has on me
This book healed me! so many tender close to home subjects that I was so shocked to be seen in with this book. It was a very tense read basically until the end. all the friend moments were great relief though. i will be re reading!
