I wanted to love this one. I really did. It had all the elements I adore (magic, sorcery, the woods, likable MCs, competition, mystery) but I just couldn't make myself fall for it. ::Too much sarcastic humor and witticisms in serious situations turned me off.:: WIT AND HUMOR IS GREAT, don't get me wrong, it just wasn't for me in this particular instance. A LOT going on/trying to keep up. There were parts I simply couldn't stop reading and there were a couple days where I had to space myself away from it. I'm in the minority it seems because it's fallen under mostly high 3, low 4 stars --- I tried, just couldn't fangirl over it.

You know, I just REALLY wanted to like this one. (And let me kick this off by saying, as a straight female, I was neither offended nor turned off by the girl-loves-girl thing) I just felt empty at the end. From the start I was hooked (fairy-tale retellings rock my socks off) - it was so textured and layered --> the writing was LUSH. So many amazing descriptors and the dialogue moved at a wonderful pace. The backstory flowed well with the present. Then it just all started to let me down. All the "insta-loves" I could've even handled if I would've felt any depth/connection. At the end, it just...well...ENDED. I'm not going to say I didn't enjoy it, I just doubt I pick it back up again :(
Bone Song by John Meaney

Sweet baby Jesus, this was hard. Apparently I'm in the minority here when I say I struggled. First off - Meaney's brain = magical. I mean, to come up with all of this is brilliant really. For me, though, it was way too much. It was like every single dark, Gothic creature and fantasy spin he could throw in there - he did. Which is great - if you understand what's going on the whole time. To be honest, I didn't. I got lost so many times. So - I guess it's a compliment to Meaney because I struggled to keep up with his madness. The world building was fantastic - on the upside. Holy cow, dude. And the characters? I loved them. Even Donal - who was flaky at best. Sure, he had his "deep" moments but really he just had a perpetual hard on the entire time. Xalia was my favorite part, by far, along with FenSeven. And that ending? Brutal, Meaney, brutal.
Whale Day: And Other Poems by Billy Collins

3.5 stars --> "Reached-up-and-grabbed-me" favorites included: Sleeping on My Side, Objectivity, Arizona, Dreaming of the Middle Ages, Anniversary...
This collection didn't quite resonate with me (today) like I'd hoped - not to say another day wouldn't be different. Collins takes ordinary moments and infuses them with whimsy or cloudiness; I'm headed to Musical Tables next and will see if my inclinations solidify.

So. Much. Fun! I love the mix of witty banter and fantasy academia, the blending of opposite personalities and constant storytelling woven between the pages. Enjoyed this one immensely!
