A wonderful story about heritage, language and belonging, complete with a loveable and odd poet, a curious and adorable girl and rainy, scotish weather.

A wonderful story, spanning multiple generations throughout the 20th century in Georgia. Following one families fate, the book delves into the history of the Soviet union, while also discussing love, disappointments and the interconnectedness of history and personal lives.

This is a beautiful telling of a horrible, abusive relationship between the author and her girlfriend. Told in fragments examining the story from different perspectives, Machado manages to capture a story that has not been told often enough before.

From the description of the book I thought I'd love it, however, I thought it was badly executed and not very convincing. It felt like a bad retelling of stories we've all heard before.
