I loved the first in this series, liked the second, but I am so uncomfortable with Emily's bullying here. If the 'rivalry' was just between the two of them, maybe I'd be okay with it-- but roping the whole town in to make someone's life so miserable they leave is not a cute plot.
In an alternate reality where they don't get together, Jack ends up with a poorly maintained, perhaps dangerous house, difficulties buying the most basic supplies, and no friends/support despite being a kind and decent guy -- and an excellent teacher. Yes, I'm taking a romcom too seriously but I don't think there'll be an acknowledgement of nasty this behaviour is.
