an enjoyable read that puts words to many interesting political and philosophical thoughts. the plot itself is less important than the observations it makes, so sometimes the characters' actions and decisions feel stilted (but i didn't mind that too much personally). however, i'm docking my rating because, as many others have noted, a trans character is repeatedly misgendered in the text.
Death in Her Hands by Ottessa Moshfegh

this book is very confusing. not because it's ostensibly about nothing, but because the writing is impeccable, and i sped through it despite feeling underwhelmed throughout. i think there's a lot to be admired here, including the unreliable narrator's descent and the fact that her name is literally vestigial (sorry, "vesta gul"). however, you'll get the sense early on that nothing will happen, and for the most part, that assessment is correct. definitely well worth the read for the #ottessahive but not a book i'd suggest otherwise.
Woman, Eating by Claire Kohda

meandering but entertaining. (i should say, meandering AND entertaining.)
i find it boring that people will reduce any story about a sad woman to "sad girl lit." there are many ways to be sad, and one of those ways is to be a placeless vampire in the modern age.
