Torn between 3.5 and 3.75 so I’m going to give it the higher rating.
I want to say this just wasn’t a book written for me but the premise itself, setting, and politics should’ve made for the *perfect* book for me as a reader. But unfortunately I just didn’t connect the way I was hoping I would.
Everything was connected plot wise but there were just some moments where I felt like things needed to be smoothed out for a more seamless storytelling.

It’s been about a month since I’ve finished this so all I really have to say is: this book is perfectly dark and addictively unsettling

I’ll write a better review later but for now this is all I have:

This was one of my most anticipated reads for this year. So much so that I emailed the publisher asking for an ARC and when I received a copy of this book in the mail from them I screamed. SCREAMED.

I tried to lower my expectations so that I wouldn’t be disappointed but there was no need to do so because this tickled the part of my brain that I was hoping it would. This book is the closest I’ve come to reliving my experience of reading the empress of salt and fortune. Nghi Vo has such skill when it comes to writing an immersive world and story where you just let lost in the words on the pages.

It served its purpose which was giving me more of this world and the characters I love but was it necessary? No. Did it really add anything special to the universe? Also no. The dialogue and story are not what entertained me when seeing this. The production and talent on stage did.

Listened on audio.

I feel like saying I enjoyed listening to a story about the KKK is wrong but I mean… I did enjoy it. The narrator did a great job of telling this story and keeping your attention throughout.

Giving it the same rating as the first book because I had the same sort of experience. It took me a bit to get into the story (this one more than the first) due to not only it being in the future and things have changed in that way, but also the multiple POVs. Speaking of POVs, I really couldn’t stand Lyria. I didn’t care much for her story but even when I did start to enjoy the character as a whole, the narrator for her was just unpleasant to listen to so every time I reached her pov I’d lose interest in picking this book up.

However, much like with the first book, the plot began to slowly pick up and as soon as I started to get the action scenes I know and love from Pierce Brown, I became more and more invested and I overall had a great time, this just wasn’t my favorite of the series. Very much looking forward to starting Dark Age!

I enjoy these audiobooks for what they are but know to never expect anything out of this world story wise.
