I've only been reading 200+ pages books this year so picking this up involved a lot of hesitation because I didn't wanna start another book only to abandon it so when I started reading it, I was LOCKED tf in. It didn't help that some reviews I saw said how the story seemed to drag on and that the romance started WAY later in the book, which was a big deal to me considering I wanted to read this for the sports ROMANCE. But, even with all that, I gave this a try because it seemed promising or at least nice. And it was! It really was.

This book fits best readers that love, or at least like, slow burn. I wouldn't completely say this is slow-phased because it didn't really feel that way to me. Brady and Nick's relationship progress was just right, it felt natural and it was fun to see them fall in love slowly but surely. The side characters were all pretty fun too, you can never go wrong with found family. Even if none of the characters completely captured my heart, it was plenty fun to just see how they work with each other.

I had little to none complain about this book, my biggest one probably would be that the book ends just as Brady and Nick's relationship was starting. I really wanted to see more of them for a while considering it took the whole book for them to finally get together which---although satisfying---felt like we deserved at least 2 more chapters to see them lovey-dovey. I read the whole book anyway, I wouldn't have minded a few dozen pages more. But all in all, this was an enjoyable light-hearted read and another win for the gay sports romance community!

It's so hard to believe that I've been following this series since 2022. Honestly, I don't know what I'll do with myself when it ends. But I'm kinda sad ever since Bryce's, Nate's, and River's story, I never had a connection with any of the main characters in their own story. Although I'm keeping an eye out for Gavin's.

Excited for Levi's book, especially because of Tristan, I wanna know what role he'll play in Levi's story. NGL, I was hoping Levi would also have two mates.

05/22/24 read: Honestly, I was more interested in Ari and Atom. They were such a hot couple.

One extra star for Maiz. He was the only character that I actually cared about.

This was an okay book at the start but then the last part just took a turn for the... boring? Like, maybe not boring but it was just weird. Something felt off, probably because I didn't think this book would get so serious. When it did, I got turned off. The ending felt rushed and didn't feel right at all. The only reason I finished it was because of Maiz and nothing else.

I feel like I shouldn't give any comments on this because I really just think this book wasn't for me, I wasn't the audience. So take everything I say lightly. This book was full of anger, sadness, and hope. Hope for as much as there were anger and sadness. It was a beautiful book, if we're being objectively honest. I just felt disconnected. It was probably because these characters want to live so badly in a situation where they don't have to and I always said that if there was an event like that, I wouldn't last a day alive. But I get it, even if only to a limited extent. When you live your whole life trying to please other people, why SHOULDN'T you take space especially in a time and place where you don"t know where your death is guaranteed? It was a nice message all in all even if I couldn't relate.

A huge thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.

With that said, this book was... not what I thought it would be. There were a lot of questionable scenes and choices in this book that made it hard to focus on the romance that I came to read this book for. I don't even see what happened between Kami and Arcadia as romance because it just didn't make sense. Plus, for a sapphic book, it felt like the men took majority of the screen time and they were all fleshed out more than all of the female characters combined. The plot was okay but the writing and execution of it really made me just not take any of what is happening seriously.

But my main issue, if we're just narrowing it down, is the whole virginity talk that happened in, like, half the book. It was unnecessary and disappointing as the main reason I read this was for the sapphic aspect, instead we get several whole speech about how Kami is a virgin and how she's a danger to the mission because of that. There was also several (non-graphic to mildly graphic) SA scenes here and just r*pe mentions that completely took me off-guard.

This book is a 1 star but I made it 2 because it was bad in the "so bad it's good/entertaining" way. I will not be picking up the second part, though.

MY GOD. This is definitely one of my top stories this year so far. On my Top 5 at LEAST. I almost read it in one sitting but couldn't because it's exam week, but let me tell you, what a reward it was to finally finish it after I was done with exams. To say I recommend this would be an understatement, I want a whole fandom with this book to scream with. Will be waiting patiently for more works of Cassandra Jean and Mosskat.

The writing, the plot, the romance, the characters, the ART?!?!? The dialogues, the setting. They were all incredibly amazing and all combined together? It made this masterpiece. It's over for everyone when I have a physical copy of this because I'm buying my friends physical copies too.
