the storytelling reminded me of percy jackson, full of personality and entertaining. a really fast read, too.

Did not finish book. Stopped at 26%.
was incredibly put off by the writing style and the narration (very whiny and annoying).
also the fact that the main character met her 22-year-old boyfriend when she was 16 rubs me the wrong way (especially since he waited for her birthday to have sex, predatory). There was even a part where he said she had a "deceivingly young face", yeah dude, because she IS.

disappointing.

i feel like many parts were dragged on for absolutely no reason. despite the 500+ pages, there was absolutely no chemistry between the main couple and i honestly didn't care much for any of the main characters. it was supposed to be enemies to lovers, but i felt none of the usual angst and pining there are in books with this trope. in fact, i'd go so far as to say that this book would've been much better without any romance, it was an unnecessary filler in a book that already had so much potential.

the last few pages (seriously, like the last 20 pages or so) was the only bit that i actually enjoyed, and i think it is because the love interest was out of the picture, so more focus was given to the main character and her plight.

inan's betrayal was so pathetic? like 1 crumb of affection from his father and he's forgotten the everything he saw in zelie's memories that changed his view on magic as a whole. it just seemed out of place, especially since he didnt really seem very conflicted about his stance on bringing back magic, so how could he change his mind so much so quickly?

i definitely will not be continuing this series. as i said, the ending was enjoyable, but not enough to make me forget how i had to force myself to read 400+ pages.

kind of disappointing with this one. i usually really like maggie stiefvaters books. this one wasn't a bad book per se, but it just lacked something i feel the other books by her had, that made me care a lot about the book.
