I loved the premise of the book from the jacket, but it felt like a trudge through a swamp. I know Russell is primarily a short story writer, and at many times I felt as though this story could’ve/should’ve been a short story instead. Some of her imagery and writing style is beautiful but the novel was a slog.

I understand the criticisms of this book, about it being homophobic and fat-phobic. As I read the story, I imagined it as an anime from the early 1990s (which it was) and that helped it all make more sense. (Not that it makes those sentiments okay, but it gives them context.) I enjoyed it well enough for what it is.

I feel like I *should* like Ishiguro, but this was my 4th novel of his and I just don’t care. I thought maybe an audiobook format would be more enjoyable for me but alas, I am done with Ishiguro.
