This book was a bit slow to get interesting, but then I didn't want to put it down.

The main character screams "not like other girls" and we're reminded of this every time she makes a big deal of wearing skirts vs pants. I found a lot of her personality to be a bit grating, but she grew on me.

I guessed one of the plot twists / reveals of the book, and it was a predictable one, but the rest had me second guessing myself constantly, which was fun.

I did start to laugh every time the author described any of the men's muscular thighs, as it was definitely higher than average compared to other books I've read 😅

After getting halfway through the book it really picked up and I'm genuinely interested in reading the sequel. (Hopefully it will have less typos than this one though).

I picked this book up in the general Fantasy section in a book store, but it definitely reads as very Young Adult in parts and verging on New Adult in others.

Did not finish book. Stopped at 34%.
Life's too short to read boring books.

The general plot of this book seemed interesting but I found none of the characters likable, and worse still the main character, Ryia, is actively unlikeable. The pace was way too slow, pages were spent explaining things that could be covered in a paragraph. I kept waiting for it to get interesting but after giving it the good old 100 page try it just isn't for me.

Halfway through I was sure this was going to be 5 stars, but the ending was so rushed, there are so many unanswered questions and the fact that the special edition epilogues are so much better than the actual ending (and with that, the Waterstones ending was nowhere near as good as the Barnes & Noble ending in my opinion) is so frustrating and feels like such a money grab - I don't care that it's meant to be like the stories from the North, it's frustrating and somewhat disingenuous to the fans to split up the story-endings into exclusive only content.

I enjoyed most of the plot but I can't get over how this is it, this is the last book of the series we've all been waiting for and so many things are just left unfinished. (I also cannot believe Stephanie Garber asked on Instagram what everyone thought was the reason for Jacks and his apples, and she specifically mentions in the ending that we won't find out- why?? Feels a little mean knowing that she doesn't actually answer that question 😅)

There was a lot of pressure on this book to be amazing, especially after the first 2 books in the series, so while it is still a fun read and a loveable series, it could never have lived up to its own hype. I hope in time when I reread it I'll fall in love with the whole series.

So well written, everytime I thought I could guess what was going to happen next it would take a different turn. Loved it.
