this book is described under the the genre "Jewish", so maybe I'm not culturally the correct target for this new fiction. However, the smugness came through crystal clear by page 5. I tossed this book after the beginning chapters described the female lead character in only, unironically, superficial male gaze stereotypes culminating with the narrator's astute rumination that the woman he was speaking to could definitely not have health issues because there's "not an ounce of flab on her well formed body." ICK!!!! Instant DNF.

A truly good Stephen King book is a fully immersive experience. Unfortunately right before I read this book I read Joyland. In Joyland I truly felt like each of those characters exist in this world somewhere and I could stumble upon them in my travels. This book is no Joyland.

Aside from the repetitive regurgitation of the plot by different characters every time the story took a painfully slow step forward - this is a book where you know someone is sitting with a pen and pad directing these characters willy nilly yet still keeps them trucking right down the middle of Mediocre Lane.

If you have experienced the delight of a well-woven Steven King tale then you know this falls far short. Skip this one and let the Mr. Mercedes characters conclude with a better imagined future in your mind.
