This is my second story by this author. I liked the premise and I liked both of the MCs. I liked all the tension and build up. The miscommunication trope was strong in this story. Both MCs avoided expressing their interest at all costs. It was nearly 3.5 hours of angst just waiting for this couple to get together. When they FINALLY got together I was so confused. I thought the lady MC was having another day dream about the dude because the scenario seemed trippy, a bit awkward and out of nowhere. There was no lead up in that moment, no verbal expression of interest, no heavy eye contact, not even any kissing… and then all of a sudden there was P in the V. There were also some cringey things said throughout this spicy scene. Like, “Can I kiss you?” after they already did the deed and thanking her at random moments. Some of what was said was just plain confusing. Was he trying to say that he’s asexual? A virgin? That he’s had a bad experience, so he doesn’t sleep around? That he was previously saving himself for marriage? What’s going on?! I was enjoying this story so much up until the last 25 minutes or so. I feel let down by that ending.

I’ve had this book on my bookshelf for a really long time and have seen it talked about by so many people. Unfortunately, I didn’t really like it. This book was very YA, which is great if you enjoy YA, but I typically don’t these days. The characters, plot, and writing were all pretty shallow, plain and simple. The beginning of the story was intriguing, but nothing much happened for a huge chunk of the middle. I got bored with the lack of action and slow pace. The romance was also completely uninteresting to me. I did like the MC’s secret, her quick wit and her funny comebacks… and that’s about it for things I liked. This story kind of reminded me of To Kill a Kingdom. While I liked Daughter of the Pirate King more, I’m giving it the same rating because overall I didn’t much care for it.
