One of my favorite books from my favorite series. Megan Whalen Turner is a masterful writer, there are so many small details you miss on a first read that make rereads just as exciting as the first.

I am also, of course, obsessed with her characters and the ways she shows Just enough for you to be emotionally devastated while still leaving relationships between characters private in a way I haven’t seen other authors do.

I just accidentally refreshed and lost my entire like 1k word review. Eventually I will go back and rewrite it but TL;DR: so “woke” it loops back to being bigoted (super white, pro-imperialist, the Computer is based on eugenics), the characters are flat and not good people which is never really addressed lol (
mostly referring to Helena cheating on August
), the book jacket implies a lot of political maneuvering of which there is none and also implies the ending will be a triad that ~breaks boundaries~ in the empire when instead we get
a poorly proposed V based on cheating (!!!!!!) and a tacked-on-at-the-last-minute beard marriage for August and Margaret. So romantic 🙄
.

Do not recommend.

Written well but Super TERF-y. Female-like witches is a super common trope and isn’t innately TERF-y but magic is constantly described as ~coming from their wombs~ including their wombs tingling when they do magic??? Gross. Also when one of the characters realizes she’s pregnant it says “She was breeding.” BRO WHAT???

Seriously though it pulled me out of the book every time they describe their wombs tingling 🤢🤢

Also most of the characters are very one note which made them super boring :/

I really loved the premise and the narration style, the monologue about
the beginning of the world and the rising of the seas
was incredible (don't know if that actually needs to be spoilered but!). However, the ending felt too rushed and really anticlimactic, not sure if it's supposed to be setting up for a sequel but it was a huge let down :( 7/5 stars for the rest of it 1/5 for the end.

Interesting premise, terrible execution. Time skips felt super lazy, gave the same feeling as watching the first season of TWD then skipping to season 5 or something, author just hand-waved any actual journeys and community development :/

I personally found the main character insufferable, too much "Oh I'm a poor sexy woman who love my hot boyfriend too much, also I have super cool magic powers but I'm still too dainty to do anything :((((("
