The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer
3.0
When I first started this, I had forgotten what it was about (except for the fact that it centered around a clone). I didn't take the time to reread the blurb on the back, because sometimes it's fun to go into a story with almost no expectations.
These are the things I enjoyed:
1. The concepts of how Matt felt as a clone and how normal people viewed clones.
2. The descriptions of life at the Alacrán Estate. It felt removed from the rest of the world, trapped in the past.
3. Matt, as a character overall. His loneliness and longing for acceptance, but also his resilience.
4. His relationships with Tam Lin and Celia.
The things I didn't enjoy so much:
1. How selfish and depraved most of the people in Opium seemed to be. It was necessary to the story, but sometimes it just got a little depressing.
2. Matt didn't often DO anything to move the plot along. The things that happened were usually out of his control, and he was just along for the ride.
3. El Patrón's death was wasted! It would have been so much more effective if Matt had confronted him in some way before he died, but instead it just happened and Matt didn't even get to be there.
4. Speaking of death, the ending. Most of Matt's enemies, conveniently dying while he was away, just fell flat for me.
In conclusion, a book that I enjoyed once, but probably won't read again. I might check out the sequel, though.
