my grandma bought me this book when i was in high school. i was 7 when my mom was murdered and now i’m 27 reading this book for the first time. my mom was 26 when she was killed and i had no idea how much of my identity was based on her and the image my family built of her for me. i took on her mistakes as if they were my own to carry and make right. this book helped me realize that i’m not alone. it also helped me realize that i am allowed my own identity outside of my mother.

i have spent the majority of my life hating myself. i often thought i had gaslight myself into believing that society was not to blame and i just simply did not fit in. this book has helped me see that there is a whole NEW part of my identity that has been neglected and unseen being raised by my white family in predominantly white towns in small town Texas.

this book had a plot twist i needed! i was worried the names of the chapters would make it hard for me to keep things lined up in my mind but it all made sense anyways. i love how deep this book goes and how open it leaves the meaning of friendship.

i’m not sure if this book is just perfectly timed in my life or what, but i love how the author was able to tell a very specific story but with a broad enough detailing for it to be relatable. for anyone who feels like they are not what society would deem “an acceptable adult” i would recommend this book. everyone has to make their own path it’s only important that you figure out YOUR OWN.

reading a black woman’s story from a COMPLETELY different walk of life and still relating on so many of her stories and topics reminds me of why going to an hbcu was such a vital part of who i’ve become. so happy i came across this book! the reminder i needed that sometimes you become your best self when you get experience away from where you were raised.

this is by far my favorite book of the series. everything fell together perfectly and honestly wouldn’t have been upset about this being the ending. can’t wait to see where we go from here. (:

the author builds a beautiful bridge to develop a connection with all the gods and not just the ones that the characters themselves are linked to. the characters develop quickly but slow enough for you to grow attachments. this books is a perfect blend of fast moving story but keeps your attention slowly.
