choosing to add a supernatural element to the donner party incident is a very risky choice considering what makes that incident interesting is what the humans were droven to by extreme circumstances. sadly, the choice doesn't pan out here, and this is a pretty bad retelling of that story.

the delicately-placed flaws in the main character's thinking, the way his developement stagnates throughout the book as others evolve, are really what drive the tension in this story. unnerving despite its mild manner, or because of it.

some of the most relatable descriptions i've found of cults in fiction. i especially liked the decaying relationship between phoebe and will. absolutely gorgeous writing, descriptions, metaphores.

gorgeous exploration of the relationships between women of three generations. like fat slices of memories bursting out of the page. (won't lie - it reminded me somewhat of gilmore girls, so i'd definitely recommend it to a fan.)

a companion to charles horton cooley's theory of the "looking-glass self", approaching the question differently: if one cannot be seen for their true self, then one cannot a full member of society, or even fully their own self. beautiful language and vivid descriptions. sour note: we aren't allowed to fully bask in the absurdity of the world created, when it is constantly explained.

not much in the way of plot, and the characters aren't very interesting, but the atmosphere & the odd events are unmatched.
