This book reminded me of Girl, Woman, Other. I thought it was resonant, but the pacing felt off, with a rushed ending.

So good. I loved the idea of un-drowning.

It took me forever, but I finished it! I wish I had studied Flannery in school because WOW she is a genius, and there's so much here.

Another set of weird stories that echo in my mind, and I'm very glad to have a paper edition, as well, to look back on.

I read this one because (full disclosure) the author was a colleague at my very first job, and we’ve kept in touch ever since. I think it’s a helpful, tactical book for younger professionals, but what it really made me think about was power. There’s so much here about claiming your power and not letting other people steal it. And I think that’s how a lot of environments are, this grasping at power and status, which made me kind of sad to contemplate. My biggest takeaway was this concept about making promises to yourself, based on the premise that we build trust with others by doing what we say we will do, but do we hold ourselves to the same standard and build self-trust?

The author reframes ambition as conscious investment of time, energy, purpose to anything. So, how can we be ambitious about our relationships, community, etc? I found it thought-provoking but not mind-blowing, and that's fine.
