The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
4.5
I first read this in high school but I wrote a paper on it so I thought i remembered it well. Then I watched the musical this week and needed to reread the book lol. The book is definitely better than the musical! I honestly hated most of the characters they were all yuppies who wouldn't know honest work if it looked them in the face. The musical showed Daisy as a tragic damsel in distress type but she's the same as ALL OF THEM! She doesn't care about Gatsby more than she cares about herself (which fair enough). Also Nick is too gay for Gatsby lmao I kept finding myself rooting for Gatsby but he's just like the rest of them obsessed with status and wealth. Daisy is a trophy for him (but also for Tom let's be real). She was raised to be a trophy and she acts like someone who thinks she's better than everyone because of it. Whatever it's a short read and it's a little complicated. I liked it even on a reread.
What happened with that guy in the artistic game and Nick? 🤔

Don't Want You Like a Best Friend by Emma R. Alban

Omg... I don't know about this one yall... I have 2 main issues though.
1. It felt at times like this was the story of the 2 side characters in another greater love story. The amount of focus on the parents relationship was wayyyyyy more than I was expecting. Like i almost would rather read about the parents.
2. The worst part of this entire book is the fact them being step sisters is like the goal??? Idk it's gross to me because you're supposed to be family and at the end they're like sharing a sibling which makes them very much like siblings idk I didn't like it.
Kinda obsessed with the lavender marriage idea at the end thought 👀

Omg 🫨 i didn't expect any of that lmaooo. I thought everyone was sooooo fucking unbearable like I did not understand how they were going to redeem these people... they didn't lol. I wish we would have seen more from Renee in the beginning like she seemed kinda flat. Rip Mike but that's it
When He Was Wicked by Julia Quinn

Definitely the best bridgerton book so far! Maybe it's because they could bend the society rules since she's a widow idk but it works. I think Michael is a classic unrealistic perfect man which is honestly uncommon for Bridgerton lmaooo. Francesca was kinda annoying not gonna lie but she's also like soooo young (she's only 26 😦) and kinda dumb. I still hate the inexperience kink that's present in all of these books. Excited to see how they make this gay in the show 🥳
To Sir Phillip, With Love by Julia Quinn

Oh.. my.. god.. i hated every second of that holy shit 😦 first of all I hate Philip and I wish he had never responded to Eloise 🙄 I don't understand how he's like allowed to be like I'm just a man idk anything about dumb women and feelings 🤠 like at the end when Eloise was like we never do anything together except fuck and I don't want that to be the basis of our relationship, he was like you don't know what it's like to be in a bad marriage or real worries about like your children. I think Eloise was valid in her concern and I think they made her pathetic at the end instead of Philip learning to be a real man/husband/father.
I hate the way they treated Marina!! She had real depression and they women in the freezered her! She is just more of the reason Philips life before Eloise sucked.
They didn't know each other well enough to be in love imo ! 2 weeks is a short amount of time wtf.
I genuinely hate Philip! He ruined the book honestly. He was a bad dad... that's a fact! You cannot be a good man/husband and a bad dad and I stand by that! Also he literally did not see Eloise as her own person like she existed to serve him whether that be childcare services or sex. He's disgusting. I believe he loves his kids though.
Things I like include the Bridgerton sibling dynamic and i love a single parent.

I didn't hate it but I found myself skimming towards the end. I think it's too millennial for my taste. I found Garland (which side note they never explained her name like no offense but what) to be kinda cringe as fuck 😬 being weird and loud isn't funny I'm sorry I know it was all about her accepting herself but herself is annoying imo! I found her journey with figuring out her sexuality very relatable and I felt for her in that. I also found their friends to lovers relationship very sweet ... however I do have a bone to pick with the UHauling that happened like why did they have to drop everything and be together idk it felt unrealistic and like too much 😕 like what are the odds you both are at such specific transitional periods in your lives where you can travel and use your sibling for security idk.

Very cute!! I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. I read Mistakes Were Made and it's a little weird iykyk so I don't know what I was expecting but this was very cute indeed.
I love that they're both openly a little weird ❤️ I loooove when one person is obsessed and Phoebe scratched that itch for me with her truly unhinged obsession with Grace!! Like I need my future partner to have posters of me on childhood bedroom walls!
Suffered from my least favorite plot device: miscommunication. Like how can phoebe think they're in a relationship where she is not allowed to acknowledge the relationship??? Truly insane but yk she was obsessed.

Romancing Mister Bridgerton by Julia Quinn

Definitely my favorite bridgerton novel I've read so far! Ngl tho the characters are so flat 🤧 they always are so I won't complain too much.
THE BAD
Why is Colin so mad all the time??? Is that a straight man thing like wtf? He's always mad and he almost exclusively takes it out on Penelope like can't you tell you're upsetting her! 🤬
I hate that he can't deal with his emotions properly and like is so rough with her when he grabs her arm or yanks her around. In my head, it's not violent and the they were being dramatic but he was being normal 😌 for my peace.
I don't like that he didn't properly propose to her either ... it's not romantic to marry someone because you want to fuck like wtf. I think Penelope also felt like that but she's so 😶
Omg miscommunication pisses me off so much 😤 like she thinks he's ashamed of her but no it's jealousy or she thinks he hates her writing but no he's insecure 😡 idk how she was thinking all of that and still married him 🙄 to be fair tho she did say she'd say yes to whoever proposed to her.
I hate that they'll be in a huge intense argument and then start fucking like bro 😒 yall need to TALK!
THE GOOD
I love that Colin realized that it's him that didn't notice her, just like the rest of the ton, instead that she's somehow different and more interesting now.
I love that Colin doesn't even entertain any of the girls that are out and he wants a real partner, like how he said he didn't want a dull marriage 🥰
Also when Colin realized he wants Penelope, he goes full into it like he never is embarrassed or ashamed of wanting her.
Then when she does talk about before and her life as a wallflower he's rightfully ashamed to have never noticed her!
I love that he's always holding her and touching her again making it obvious he's attracted to her and wants her like yesss Penelope you are hot who cares what your mom thinks.
I did not understand his side of the argument about the Lady Whistledown stuff ngl but I love that she was not the one to give up because she's right that's her life's work and if anyone should understand being precious about it it should be Colin that was bitching and moaning about not having a purpose.
He's kinda dumb which is whatever lol but whenever she thought he was being cruel he like wasn't. When she said he runs off to escape responsibility and he was like is this you proposing as joke, she was like don't be mean 🥺 she's still sensitive when he rudely was like I will never marry Penelope Featherington which I would hold that against him too. Which is actually crazier because by the end of the carriage ride he's "proposed" to her (I wish he would have actually asked her).
LMAO when he says marrying felicity would be like marrying his sister hyacinth and that's literally what Penelope said when her mom floated that idea to her.
Anyways I just love the idea of Penelopes character (she's a little to meek for me 🙈 but I love a shy girl) and Colin worships her as he should!

Funny Story by Emily Henry

This is officially my favorite Emily Henry novel 😍 (I’ve only read book lovers and people you meet on vacation btw) I saw online people hated Miles but I don’t get it 😕 I think people want to perfect man too much like Peter’s character but Miles is a sweet man 😭 he’s actually a nice guy like helping your ex move is too nice almost lmaoo he’s also sensitive like he cried at least twice which honestly I don’t remember last time a male lead has cried in a rom com 🙄 also I don’t think it’s gross or whatever that he smokes weed (honestly I wish he wouldn’t have given it up so fast) yk women can also smoke weed right? I feel like the way his character changed as Daphne got to know him was soooo perfect 🥹 at first he was Petra’s loser ex which is what Peter fed her but then she realized he’s nice and fun and honestly he’s fun in a small town way not even a loser way!! I liked that Daphne learned to manage her expectations both with the people in her life but also with her own life. Like sometimes people are late not because they don’t care about you but because they’re just living their lives and things happen! And you can’t expect everyone around you to be responsible for your feelings like not everyone is your dad! Also the whole thing with Ashleigh being like you are a “we” person and as soon as you get a new “we” you stop caring about anything besides whoever your partner is.. that’s soooo fucking real! You can’t hold everyone to a standard of prioritizing you and your feelings no matter what but then also not prioritize anyone but your partner. Ugh I just really loved the book lol
