I wanted to like this one. And parts of it I really did like. I don't think I've read a book set in Africa before, so the change of scenery and different POVs were totally welcome. But I think there was just far too little relationship development.

We got to know the hero and heroine separately. They interacted a dozen times in what, to me, was pretty uneventful/mundane things. And then the hero thinks to himself: I'm in love with her! I was flatly unconvinced.

Also I think what makes it more complicated for me is that I'm a mom to an almost 18 mo old. The hero has a newborn/very young son, and is not with the baby's mother, but they live together and moved to this small town together. I would be furious if my co-parent brought the person who they were now dating around my baby without telling me. Because it's DIFFERENT, when they "meet" or interact in that capacity. Also he never even told his co-parent that he was interested in dating, or going to be dating, or actively dating. I couldn't help but completely side with her. And it soured me on the book for sure.

This story is told in a very weird POV. It's third person but... present tense? I think? Ex: "Latrice wakes up at 6:30 on the dot. Her brain has long been wired to wake her up at that exact time during all of summer break. She lies in bed and stares at the ceiling, thinking about her to-do list for the day. She has a consultation at nine, meets with Rachel at noon, then has dinner with Nadia tonight." TELL ME THAT ISN'T JARRING

Ultimately these two separate quotes within a few chapters made me DNF:
Nathan's mind inevitably wanders to Latrice's sweet juices...
&
He didn't just shit where he eats, he had diarrhea.

On page 1:
  • "...clutching my morning mimosa..."
  • "...before sipipng the mimosa I hid in my cup with the company logo stamped on it..."
  • "...then took a sip of my mimosa..."

Guys, I think she was drinking a mimosa!!!!

This is the kind of petty annoying thing that I simply can't handle in a book because it speaks to the level of writing/ proof reading that was done.

I was pretty determined to finish this book but I'm giving up at 78%. I really dislike Jamie... she's self-centered, mean, quick tempered. She invalidates Peaches feelings. She's a brat! And not in a sexy way.

I've been sitting on writing a review for this book for like a day because I don't know exactly how to rate or review this book. Don't get me wrong, I really liked it! I just have a lot of feelings - and no "bad" ones... I'm trying to figure out if this is a 4, 4.5, or 5 star read to me. (Because as most readers know, sometimes books are 5 stars because you can appreciate the way they were written, the set up of the characters/romance, the prose, etc. And sometimes a book is 5 stars because of how it makes you feel!)

From the beginning I was hooked on this book. But it gave me some anxiety as well.

Sage is like a black cat. Prefers to be alone, professional, hard worker, unemotional, straightforward, honest. She's a workaholic and has a lot of natural talent, grit, and flawless execution. She's been reigning as the best or one of the best artists.

Noah is like a golden retriever in pastel. She has the ideas, storytelling, dialogue, and works hard to make her execution match up. After years of grinding, she gets a job at the comic company where Sage works.

Sage has spent years waiting for her big breakthrough - the chance to be the head artist and lead her own comic. Then Noah comes in and makes her a CO-head artist. They're rivals. Sometimes enemies. Sometimes collaborators. Maybe friends.

"When I'm number one, I wonder how many of you guys will still say I'm overrated. You gonna be leading that charge?"
She gave me a teasing smile, and I laughed, feeling slightly lighter because my words had stuck with her. I didn't realize I had the power to do that. Even in the meeting today, Sage seemed immune to criticism. Every word washed off her into an ocean of 'I don't give a fuck.'
"I'll be the president of the group," I promised. "And when I'm number one, I'll make it a law to ban your nostalgic fans once and for all."
Sage laughed. "This is your chance, Pastel. This is the best one you'll get. A factory wipe. If you really deserve the number one spot, you better take it."
"Don't worry," I said with renewed energy. She was right. This was my shot, a chance to beat her on even playing field, to prove to her and to anyone who dared compare us that I could be better. "I will."

There's drama outside of their conflict with each other. Both have family issues that they deal with throughout the book, that caused an equal amount of anxiety for me.

This book was just... fun. The competition between them at work and outside of work; the teetering they do between friends and enemies, as they try to understand one another; the way Sage tries to come out of her shell only to repeatedly retreat inward to protect herself. I just loved it! And I definitely have a soft spot for Sage.

Important to note: I did say this has the best hand touching scene since Pride and Prejudice and I stand by that.

His name is Uriah, her name is Aria. Why?

Didn't connect to either characters, the "romance", or the story. This is very much telling over showing in terms of storytelling and it just isn't working for me.

This one was... rough.

I found myself so annoyed with the heroine throughout the book. First of all, how much time did you need to wax poetic about how HOT Jasper is??? Like girl... pull yourself together, he's just a man.

And then Jasper is literally the cardboard cutout Perfect Man. I was BORED TO TEARS, I'm sorry. Could not get even the slightest bit invested in him as a hero or them as a couple.

And lastly: the drama with her dad? For what?! There was no ending or resolution. Same with her half-sister! I completely forgot about Daisy until she randomly sprang up at the end in a cameo appearance. Why introduce her and create this backstory of "we weren't raised together / we have no realtionship / clearly Daisy is trying / lets try to be friends" if you won't have her in the book??

Sometimes there's a book that just fits you to a tee with its tropes/characters... and that's this book for me. I anticipated this book so much because of the pairing - Ariadne, the sweet and hopeful daughter of a tyrant, and the Minotaur, a vicious weapon wielded by her father.

I love good girl + bad boy and this adds in so many elements I love. He was born a street child, and had to survive by any means necessary. She was a coddled princess who was sweet and caring. He loved her at first sight, and became her father's weapon with the promise that one day she would be "given" to him. He's possessive, emotionally stunted, morally gray.

So even though this book may not be "the best" technically.... oh boy did I love it. I MUST do an annotation of it.

Oof, this one really really didn't work for me.
I wanted to love it because it's best friends brother, and he's had a crush on her forever... but yikes.
There was insta-love on her part, but it wasn't even fun. I did not like the inclusion of her being an influencer with a scandal, especially when "The Video" (as it was talked about over and over again) was done in such a purposefully vague way. It was just... not good.

It's a no from me. The writing style did not work for me, and the fact that we got the hero's POV - in the past - as he boned other women... no thank you.
