My library due date came before I could finish. I will likely try and read it again later.

5☆ This is one of my favorite books of the year! I'd vaguely heard the word paniolo and I always love reading about Hawaii but this was even better than I thought it would be. I was hooked from the first paragraph and loved the whole thing. Other reviews mention that it jumps around but I had no trouble following it so that didn't bother me at all. SO glad I read this one!!

This book was...a lot.  I appreciate the amount of information in this book, but there was so much, I felt rather overwhelmed.  It seemed like the story of the Hawaiian cowboys was so short, and told so fast toward the end, that I kind of felt like they were cheated.  Being from Wyoming, it was cool learning about the origins of Cheyenne Frontier Days, but again, there was so much information.  There was so much fun stuff to listen to, until my brain got overwhelmed and I wanted to fall asleep.

Wonderful! A little-known history, especially to mainlanders. Focused around Cheyenne's wild west rodeo spectacle of the early twentieth century, this book discusses the history of Hawaiian ranching and cowboy culture while also addressing the issues of annexation, sexism and racism in western culture, and the future of Hawaii both in terms of industry and climate. An easy, pleasant, and informative read.

This book was a delight! My time with it just ran out. Hope to pick it up again when my TBR is shorter or I feel the need.

A lot of Hawaiian history mixed with a history of the Cheyenne Frontier Days, but only 1 chapter on the actual Hawaiians competing in the US.
