Jackie is a professor of psychology. Her husband of two years, Miles, is a high school sports recruiter who travels a lot. That is an issue because Jackie wants to start a family. Jackie works at the same college as her ex-boyfriend of five years, Harlan. Jackie starts to notice things that are odd. Harlan brings a young colleague to dinner who Jackie works with. Jackie’s research data is tampered with. Jackie needs to figure out what is going on.

This is a psychological thriller that is filled with twists and turns. I loved trying to figure out what was going to happen next. The story has a few flashbacks that add to the mystery. The flashbacks don’t come out in the main story right away but help explain things later in the story. I also loved the hint of science in the beginning of the book. Jackie is working on a study in the book and it is explained in the beginning, going into some detail about how the study was conducted. It was not important to the overall story but I was interested in it.

Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who loves twists and turns and trying to figure out the endgame. This book will be published 01May2020. Thank you to the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

You can’t help but love the humanity of Jackie and later Miles and Harlan and Vince and Nasira but it’s Jackie whose story you cling to, wonder about and worry through.

I thought this would be a quick read romance with a twists instead I was surprised with a little taste of intrigue and a heavy dose of the secrets we all keep. And while it could have been a bit over the top it was closer to believable.

We all are Jackie just trying hard to not let our childhood color our adulthood and our last adult decisions not ruin our current lives. We all have moments when we realize who we are deep down may not be who we want to be. We all have moments we’d love to change and moments we know changed us.

Investing in Jackie’s untold story is worth the time. You’ll find yourself holding your breath a few times. Wanting to scream at a moment or two but mostly you’ll find yourself wanting to open a bottle of wine and toasting Jackie realization that to have it all you first must trust in yourself and in the hope of others

Not disappointed but didn't love it either. Parts were predictable and I found myself speed-reading certain bits because they felt completely unnecessary to the plot.

The story had so much potential and could have been very captivating; however, the writing just did not allow for that. There was too much detail in areas of the book that did not matter at all and not enough detail where there should have been. The story jumped around too much to allow for any sort of character development and/or relationship development.

In this slow-burn psychological suspense, psychologist Jackie is confronted by a lot of little “shocks” in a row and has a midlife crisis of sorts. It starts at a dinner where her ex of five years, Harlan, brings another woman, Nasira, as his date. Nasira is Jackie’s new graduate assistant. This would seem like just awkward territory, particularly since Jackie is now happily married to Miles (so why should she give a hoot?), but Jackie freaks out and starts stalking the happy couple… then finds out more than she wanted to know.

This was the second book I’ve read by Sonja Yeorg, and quite different from the first! I went into it expecting one thing, and it turned into rather another with lots of thriller elements and gaslighting and side stories from many secondary characters. Everyone has secrets. The second half of the novel was when things really started to pick up for me as the pieces began to fall into place. It took a little while for the characters in this novel to grow on me because at first they all seemed kind of shady (it reminded me of “Gone Girl” in that respect), but the plot had me turning pages and I was eager to see how it ended!

Please excuse typos/name misspellings. Entered on screen reader.

The narrator for Harlan was so bad I couldn’t get through his first chapter.

This is the first book I've read by Sonja Yoerg. I wouldn't not read another book by her, but I'm also not running right out to grab another one of her books. The writing itself was just fine. Not magnificent, not beautiful prose, but she's a solid storywriter. The issue for me was that I thought it was going to be more of a psychological thriller, but it turned out to just be suspenseful and only in a few parts. It was easy to figure out the mystery and the few twists were not that surprising.

Some reviewers loved this book with the highest ratings possible and some were DNF. For me, it was like a B read and I was hoping for an A. I give it 3.5 stars due to the decent writing and being a quick read.

This was a pretty darn good suspense thriller! I'm a big fan of Sonja's books and was excited to dive in. I'll be honest, I had some trouble at the beginning, but the book is not to blame. It took me til this book to realize that maybe suspense thrillers are difficult for me to get into and focus on right now. However, I got sucked in with this one.

Jackie is a smart woman with an established career and a dutiful husband. She is even on good terms with her ex, whom her husband has also befriended. Things start to go awry when her ex brings Nasira, young and beautiful, to dinner with Jackie and her husband. Nasira also happens to be Jackie's post doc. How interesting, that her ex is doing so much more with Nasira than he did with Jackie. They were together for years before he would even go on a trip with her, yet with Nasira, it's only been a couple weeks.

Jackie cannot get over how quickly her ex is moving with this girl. You may say she becomes obsessed. Her husband starts traveling more, she's starting to look a little crazy, her test data has been compromised...why is her life derailing so quickly all of a sudden? How has she lost control?

I did figure out the ending, though I normally do. But there were twists I didn't see coming too. The psychological narcissism of this book kept me hooked til the end.

I received an advanced copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

I was reading this book for the sake of exploring a new genre and learning the writing lesson in my subscription box, so I can't pretend I was the intended audience for this book.

That being said, aside from my issues with the main character's personality, the plot and story were well crafted and largely engaging. The pages flew fast.

Life and the dynamics of life affect people no matter the career choice, tax bracket, socioeconomic status, upbringing etc. People are still human. I appreciated how the author displayed this theme throughout the story/book, but feel like she really set her the main characters up to put a dent in the plausibility of their actions as part of the story. It was just too unreal. Interesting read but not mind-blowing.
