This was a fast read & such a sweet story! I loved the themes of being true to who you are as well as the bond of family & friends. While we are rather thrust into the world, I did find that I didn’t need too much more world building for the story’s plot to take place. With that said, as an adult I would have loved to see more world building! Still, for someone who may be closer to the intended audience’s age I think this story had the right amount of world building for the plot.

I really felt like I could connect to the characters. The flow of the dialogue matched with the illustrations really brought these two characters to life: Hawke & Grayce. I loved the fantasy backdrop to the theme of finding who you are & accepting your true self. I love fantasy so of course I was instantly drawn in. I think other readers will be too, especially since the storyline goes quick and there aren’t any real slow spots within the graphic novel. I also really loved seeing so many adult characters showing positive support to our main characters. It was really great to see throughout the story.

This will definitely be on one of my recommend lists! This story is one to check out :)

This was actually really sweet. I loved the art. I lowkey wished it delved a bit deeper into why the villain is the way she was tho.

OG:
I read this on Kindle for iPad and it felt like it was missing every other page. Real review soon.

Update: Ok so there's a lot wrong with the Kindle version of the book. The first chapter is "Soup" instead of "Coup" and on iOS and Cloud Reader it doesn't show the whole content. I'll read the rest of the book on my paperwhite but I'd avoid the kindle version D:

There is a lot bundled into this book. There is world building that is not totally explained, that we are expected to pick up on our own. Keep up, don’t you know. Nothing wrong with that. That is the way life is, without explanations this time.

The story follows twins who must escape because of a coup d’etat lead by their cousin, when she kills their grandfather, and then makes it look as though their older brother pulled it off.

The twins hide with the Communion of Blue, the priestess guild of weavers. There is magic in being able to weave the color blue out of the air.

Good message about being who you are, and feeling at home, or not.

Loved the story and the characters (and I loved how there was no transphobia), but oh how I wished for more world building!

It was neat! I loved the coloring, and the inclusive characters. I wish there was more, it seems like we only scratched the surface of this world.

I had kept seeing this on the graphic novel shelf in the children's library and pointed it out to my daughter a few times, and she finally grabbed it. The past week she's been carrying it around saying it's the best book she's ever read and telling me I have to read it. So I did. It's a beautiful coming of age/coming out story about Grayce, a transgender girl. Her and her brother are heirs to throne after their cousin Rayden, but another cousin stages a coup to take over. The siblings hide out in the Communion of Blue, a sanctuary where the the blues of the world are spun into wool. Hawke, the brother feels out of place, but Grayce finds her home. The art is very Manga inspired and is beautiful - the facial expressions serve to move the story forward. The only flaw was that the hairstyles of the communion members were so similar, I had to go back a one point to figure out who was in the scene.

I really enjoyed this middle grade graphic novel centering a young trans girl and her twin brother who have to go “undercover” in a convent of weaving magical nuns. Perfect story. I knocked a star off because I WISH it was longer. This graphic novel was 240something pages and it could have been like 400 and I feel like it could have still given me more. I want more of the twins daily life in the convent, I want more exploration and realization on the part of Grayce, I want more information on the magic system, I want more reflection on the part of Hawke!

I loved this graphic novel! Beautiful story of twins in the line of succession for a royal title, a coup, betrayal, and finding out who you really are.
