The Coincidence of Callie & Kayden by Jessica Sorensen

Jessica Sorensen has really found her bread and butter!

After reading, and loving, The Secret of Ella and Micha I was excited to wade into The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden.

This book is an emotional roller coaster! The characters are so real and flawed and hurting that you just want to crawl into the pages and hold them.

The story revolves around Callie, who we learn had something so terrible happen to her at twelve that she retracts into a protective shell and Kayden, who has been dealing with a verbally and physically abusive father his entire life.

These are two very different people the reclusive Callie and the Quarterback Kayden who although "knowing" each other their entire lives are virtually strangers when circumstances put them together at a graduation party. This meeting changes them forever.

Fast forward to Fall and the start of college. Callie and Kayden end up at the same school and haunted by what Callie did that night at the party Kayden seeks out a friendship with her only to find something so much more.

Among the drama and pain we have Luke and Seth who are sidekicks to Kayden and Callie and bring out their 'flirting with fun' side. The groups exploits made me laugh throughout the book. However, what really marks this as a well told story is that even in these light fun moments you realize that Callie and Kayden are both struggling to find the sense of 'normal' that most college students would have in partaking in things such as dancing in clubs, going to parties or hanging with friends.

This is an amazing story about how damaged a person can become from the tragedies in our lives and how these two characters fight to overcome their pasts while still keeping their horrible secrets.

I would rate this mature YA/ New Adult for excessive use of the F-bomb, other language, and sexual content (although not overly explicit)

Warning: The last few chapters and especially the ending may have you rocking in a corner crying! I was trying to turn the "pages" of my Kindle as if it were broken and it would magically turn into the rest of the story!

Don't say I didn't warn you!

Swoon-o-meter: As always I must tell you how swoon worthy the book boys are! Kayden as tortured as he is is a hard one to rate. He is certainly sweet and handsome and makes a great MC but I don't think he would land on my book boyfriend list. Not because I don't like him but because he is just so messed up! If you are the type to want to take in stranded and lost dogs and keep them then Kayden would be the guy for you.

Luke and Seth are funny and fun loving kind of guys. Luke definitely seems like the player and Seth would be the BFF. So unfortunately I don't forsee much of a book boyfriend opportunity here but I TOTALLY see a love affair happening with me and the book!

Go read it and see for yourself!

Abuse books always stress me out, and this one was no exception. I was anxious every time I turned the page. Callie and Kayden's relationship does not develop enough in this book for me to be fully invested, but they have definite promise.

I thought this book was going to be a super emotional college romance and it was. It was just not it for me and I kept making connections to the binding 13 series which felt very similar just done a little less well. I felt like the characters, especially, towards the end were making stupid decisions. The self harm in this book did make me feel very uncomfortable and I had to step away.

*******SOME SPOILERS, MOSTLY MY RANTING*******
Ok, so this is my first review! Woohoo!
Anyway, I really enjoyed this book. The romance was great, Kayden was steamy. The story line was unlike most contemporary romance books, for it has to do with rape. I don't know if I'm just awesome, but I could tell who raped her pretty early on. Both Kayden and Callie came from catastrophic home lives, which forces them together one night at a party. Yaddayaddayadda, they don't talk to each other the rest of high school, when OH HEY! they wind up at the same college. She has trust issues and only confides in her gay best friend, Seth, Kayden is fascinated by Callie and wants to get to know her (you all know the drill.) For those who do not like steamy scenes (Who doesn't??), there are quite a few in this book. SETH WAS SERIOUSLY AMAZING. Sarcastic best friends add so much to the book. His hilarious lines often gave us a little breathing room from the somewhat depressing premise of the story.
On to the negative.
So, as much as I loovvvve Kayden and Callie, their relationship sometimes confused me. I get that the girl saved your life, but sometimes she is just SO AWKWARD. SO AWKWARD!!!!! Then, after her strangeness, she suddenly bursts into uncharacteristic actions. Like, she was talking to Kayden after a football game, then suddenly decides to burst out running into the rain and spin around. Yes, I get that it was on her and Seth's little "List of Things I Need To Do Today" or whatever, but come on. That was kind of painful to read. Also, the way Kayden handles the news of Callie's rape kind of got to me. When they were about to have sex, she said she couldn't then tried to run away (which happens ALL. THE. TIME,) she tells him. He's all like "Awh, I'm so sorry!" Then doesn't bring it up again. Then, when he finds out who did rape her, he didn't really react. Usually, this wouldn't be a big deal if he wasn't in the SAME ROOM AS THE GUY. Then, suddenly, he is filled with so much rage randomly later that night that he drives to a party and beats, excuse my french, the living shit out of him.
On a side note, I really despise her older brother. I LIVE for protective older brothers, and it really disappointed me that he was such a jerk to his little sister. I know it added to the story and there isn't really anything wrong with that, but for those who hear of an older brother and think YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! like I did, be warned.
On another side note, Callie is kind of annoying to have as a main character. I kind of picture her like a baby dove with a broken wing. Helpless and fragile. I know she was raped and all, and I get that, but she was portrayed as EXCESSIVELY needy. She would practically run away like a deer in headlights whenever Kayden came around. I like having a strong heroine, like those in Jennifer Armentrout's books. I get that they are not the same, but, once again, personal preference.
*****THE ENDING CONTAINS A CLIFFHANGER THAT WILL MAKE YOU WANT TO BREAK YOUR KINDLE IN HALF. BE WARNED**************

5/12/14 EDIT*******
I'M LAUGHING SO HARD OVER THIS REVIEW OMG. REALLY, FOURTEEN YEAR OLD ME? " The story line was unlike most contemporary romance books, for it has to do with rape"???? I OBVIOUSLY READ A LOT OF CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE BOOKS... *SIGH*
ANYWAY, looking back on this two years later I realized that this book wasn't very unique, since EVERY BASIC ROMANCE BOOK HAS TO DO WITH RAPE: EITHER THE GIRL WAS RAPED, OR HAS A DRAMATIC SCENE WHERE SHE IS ALMOST RAPED BY A DRUNK GUY. OR A STALKER. OR IN THIS CASE, HER BROTHER'S BEST FRIEND. SPOILER! Ugh, I could punt my past self. All in all, this book is pretty basic and not very memorable, yet I still remembered it.... whatever, I would rate it 3 stars now due to my overabundant amount CR books I have read. But, if your new to CR books, you'll for sure like it! Then probably complain over it two years later like me.

ACTUAL RATING: 3 STARS

*Meinung:*

The Coincidence of Callie & Kayden hopelessly raw and heart-breaking. A love story that will keep you glued to the pages.

This book is full of content warnings. There’s self-harming, parental abuse and rape. I don’t think anything I write could prepare you for what you’re about to read. Unfortunately crap things happens to good people and that is a tale as old as time. There’s nothing we can do to change it, evil people exist in this world and they will continue to do bad things. This is what The Coincidence of Callie & Kayden is all about. A coincidental meeting of two souls during hard times in both their lives. Kayden trying to survive through the abuse of his coward father, and Callie saving him from further harm, she has a secret of her own, one that has pushed her to alter her appearance from beautiful to appear as ugly as possible.

Callie & Kayden have always lived in the same town. They’ve had two very different upbringings. Kayden has a life of privilege and a promising future career as a football player. But you can’t always see what happens behind closed doors, he carries the burden of a violent father, the scars are deep, and he tries to cope with the pain by inflicting further wounds upon himself. He has a girlfriend but really that is only for appearances sake, he feels incapable of feeling anything on an emotional level but it suits his needs for now.

Callie has been the butt of everyone’s jokes since the age of twelve. Everything changed for her at that age, the way she viewed the world, how she viewed herself and the relationships she forged in the world. She altered her appearance and since then her mum and dad worried about her intentions and the why. They took her to a therapist but for some reason it was concluded that she wasn’t getting enough attention at home. She’s told no one about her dark secret. She resents her brother, and he feels the same way for putting their mum through hell the last few years. But did anyone actually try to peel back the layers, did anyone really question enough why it all changed at age twelve.

They both escape their subsequent difficulties in life by moving away to college. They literally bump into each other again four months after Callie saved Kayden from further harm from his father. Initially he doesn’t recognise her because she has reinvented her image again and she’s developed a friendship with Seth. It throws him because she was known as being a loner who did nothing. Callie has finally found someone that she can trust 100% its refreshing. He knows her secret and is the big brother figure that she should’ve had. He protects her and yet pushes her at the same time to just give life a chance. He’s everything she needs.

Callie & Kayden are terrified at the pull of their connection. Its like electricity, the tension between them fizzles. As they spend time together they realise that they might just be what the other needs to heal and trust again. Callie is frightened that she might push him away with her dark demons and Kayden thinks that if Callie knew everything about him, she might not want to be with him. Little do they know that they have more in common than they realise.

The Coincidence was a very good book full of beautiful and meaningful quotes. But overall I felt like there was only physical attraction between Callie en Kayden and I missed a real connection. I also wasn't really fond of the characters, except for Seth, who is amazing.
