I really liked this book. Fletcher was endearing and a very interesting character. I felt like he had a lot of dedication and talent. Ignathius was cool. I liked him. I especially also like Sylva, Seraph, Othello, Attila, Berdon, and their demons. I hope Valens' summoner, Captain Lovett, will be ok. Also Fletcher, because that cliffhanger KILLED me! I definitely need to buy the next one!

Also, Fletcher's flashback dream and hand tattoo were innovative and awesome, definitely what made me give the book five stars - it was the extra push the book needed for it to go from 'good' to 'great/awesome'. :)

This was pretty fun. It's been almost exactly 4 years since I read this trilogy, but I remembered a bit more than I'd expected to. As before, the characters were very likable and fun. I liked Fletcher and Ignatius, as well as many of the others. The story was fun and innovative, sort of like Tolkien crossed with Harry Potter and an RPG game. I enjoyed reading it and found the pacing and writing to be decent. On to book 2! 4 stars.

Amazing book, first half was kind of slow but enjoyable nevertheless. Though it is the second half of the book where things become more interesting and the pace speeds up. Though the thing that annoyed me the most in the book is that sometimes Fletcher feels a little to childish.

Though it treads several cliches, young orphan finds that he has skills that are important in a war his world is engaged in, carves a place for himself in an elite academy, fighting against corrupt nobles, and it is a YA novel, I would have liked a little more nouance with the other students, no one group of people think the same all the time.

Still it did keep me up past my bedtime.

Thus book was a great late night read. Fletcher is an amazing main character and I thoroughly enjoyed his friends. I liked the magic system and how it works as well as Ignitious!!!! Cute little guy..
But I am excited to learn more about the orcs and Ignitious's life and adventures :)

(I'd just to put a disclaimer that I read this book at a time where I was very busy, and it took me FOREVER to get through it simply because I didn't have time for it. This probably affected my experience since there were large gaps of time that I didn't read it)

The first half of this book was a little rough for me. The development of the world was interesting, but frankly not enough to fully grasp and hold onto my attention. There's nothing really particular that I can pinpoint that it did wrong, perhaps I just wasn't in the mood for it.

The second half, though, picked up tremendously! We are introduced to so much more intrigue and conflict, both between the characters and throughout the world, increasing the stakes and making you actually feel nervous about the outcomes of certain circumstances. I loved learning about the history of summoners, elves, and dwarves, and of course, who can resist a magical school setting :)

Overall, I really like where the book left off, and I'm excited for the sequel!
