Highly entertaining travel journal with poetry and drawings. Observational rather than historiographical without being superficial.

People frequently astonish me, but few more than Sandy McKinnon, who sailed/rowed his tiny Mirror dinghy from North Wales to the Black Sea.
Why, you ask? Because he could.
He closely documents this epic voyage with much affection for the many kindnesses of strangers he encounters, and plenty of laughs for some extraordinary situations he finds himself in.
It really is a remarkable journey, but one I'm very aware could only be undertaken in this form by a man - a woman alone is always at far too much risk from the less kind strangers.
However, this is absolutely a very jolly read - if just a tiny bit long on descriptors at times.

This delightful and funny book may be in my top ten of favourite books ever. I enjoyed it so much. It is a travel memoir but it is well written, engaging, funny, exciting and informative. And now I have SUCH itchy feet!

DNF.
maybe it was wrong of me to read a book about boats of which i have no interest it.
but i just decided to give it a go. read until page 20 and decided i had to put it down. there were much more books that i rather read.
i didn’t like the author’s writing style too. i’m sure this must’ve been very enchanting for people who love the sea, but i am not one of those people.
and the book wasn’t captivating enough to capture my attention either.

This was good, it sounded like fun and there were multiple Swallows and Amazons references. i dont usually like nonfiction of any form and have trouble actually reading it, even when i want to, but i really enjoyed this. i think it technically is nonfiction since its travel writing or a memoir or whatever but it still reads like a novel (it still is a novel i think). i found it actually pretty interesting, with him sailing a mirror dinghy (thats what i sail sometimes), and all the places he went and the stuff that happened to him were interesting. i like the writing style, and thought it was quite funny and relatable or something like that.
