i forgot to mark this book as read for THREE WEEKS. who am i???
the percy jackson universe as a whole is so special, heroes of olympus is a gift. i honestly can’t put into words the joys of returning to this franchise as an adult. it’s so interesting to me that even now, i enjoy it just as much as I did when I was 12 years old. it’s a testament to rick’s writing. everything else i’ve said about this series remains true. a standout cast of characters that are managed so well throughout the series. a tightly knit plot that comes together so beautifully. a depth and seriousness to conflict that is often missing from middle grade level content. we are so lucky to have rick riordan and a story like this.
standout character from this book was NICO. he is so precious to me it hurts. i want to wrap him up in a blanket and take him to therapy and tell him it’s all going to be okay. <3 also long live my affections for leo
definitely going to take a hiatus before I start the next series so prepare to be sick of me

It took me a really long time to read this book, and some of that was being busy, but mostly, it was being scared.

All readers have a series or character that they grow up with. That character marks a curve in their lives. They start their journey when you're just starting out, and their story comes to a close just as you're moving on from your childhood to bigger and better things. Not only do they help you figure out who you are, they make you who you are. for my mother it was Aslan the Lion, for my older sister Harry Potter, for my father it was Froto and Bilbo Baggins.

For me it was Percy Jackson. I read The Lightning Thief in one sitting, on the beanbag chair in my room on a Friday night in the 4th grade. I Have had so many new Percy Jackson adventures since then. I know this might sound crazy, but if this book, the last with Percy (or so I believe I may be happily mistaken) didn't end perfectly, it would crush me. I would've felt like my childhood was rearranged into something that makes no sense. Its terrifying. It's the reason my mom never read the last book to The Chronicles of Narnia, which I never understood until now.

It was PERFECT. Everything I could've asked for and more. I was very emotional reading it, but it was incredible. In my opinion, other than being generally fantastic author and person and being incredible at endings, the thing that makes Rick Riordan a phenomenal writer is that he creates an experience for the reader. When I read his books, I make memories, and that's special.

I'm going to miss wondering what dumb thing Percy is going to do next, or how he's going to save the day when things seem impossible, but I will always have the memories that I made reading about him, and whenever im feeling Nostalgic, or upset, or even bored, he's never more than a bookshelf away. So thank you, Uncle Rick, for writing up a childhood friend that taught me so much about love, friendship, bravery, and doing what's right. And thank you so much Percy Jackson for being there for me when everyone else is gone or angry or tired of me. You've given so much to me, and I will always remember, cherish, and come back to visit you. I swear it on the Styx.

3.5 stars! ⭐

ladies and theydies, at last i have completed my re-read of the HoO series. thank you all for accompanying me on this month-long journey.

i enjoyed this book, but i did have some qualms with it as a whole. firstly, i wish we'd gotten chapters written from percy and annabeth's POVs. i love those two nerds more than life itself; not to mention, their POVs are definitely the most engaging and the most fun to read. this book would have been better had we gotten to experience the events through the eyes of two of the most important and lovable characters.

which leads me to my next point: there were sections of the novel that REALLY dragged. it took me about a week and a half to get through this book, primarily because i simply wasn't as engaged in its plot. it wasn't as compelling as some of the other instalments (looking at you, MoA and HoH). we can definitely blame that on the lack of percy + annabeth chapters, but i also think that generally speaking, the crew's journey to athens just didn't really interest me much.

now, onto the good stuff. i really enjoyed the chapters written from reyna and nico's POVs. their quest to return the athena parthenos is what kept me reading, and it's a big reason why i managed to trudge through the middle of this book. introducing orion as a villain was also a genius move.

the climax of this book was a treat! i will never be over percy kissing annabeth to end the centuries-long athena/poseidon feud: "the rivalry ends here. i love you wise girl." DO Y'ALL HEAR ME FUCKING SCREAMING!!!!!!!!!!!!

another few key details that were incredibly entertaining: percy waking gaea with a goddamn NOSEBLEED. seriously, that has to be the funniest thing that has ever happened to him. also, octavian accidentally catapulting himself into the sky? yeah, talk about SATISFYING
