Very informationally dense. The most interesting parts detailed have to be the resurgence in traditional sailing methods, carbon dating, and the recanting of early encounters between people. Very educational but a lot of stuff to understand and get through.

The prose is beautiful, the message is incredibly moving; everything about this book screams remarkable. Definitely worthy of a Nobel Prize. must-read

This was a painful read, it was a DIFFICULT read. Should it be banned in high schools? Absolutely NOT!

You can not erase history by making the stories unavailable to new generations to read. The black community can only speak to the authenticity of the experience within its pages. As I am not part of that community, I am not rating the story.

Imagine hitting it out of the park so hard with your first novel.

Morrison is widely respected for a reason. Her prose and dialogue are unparalleled in this generation and readers can find beautiful writing even when describing some of the ugliest sides of humanity. The novel centers around Pecola, a young black girl with a hard life, as seen by Claudia, another girl her age. As the novel progresses, you see the perspectives and backstories of those in her life and how they came to be the people they were and why they treated her the way they did. The inheritance of cruelty, despair, and self-loathing is a throughline that humanizes even the worst characters in the book.
