(yes i know that’s pretty harsh. no i don’t care)

wow i love it when the central character is a horrible person yet this is never pointed out by the author or any other characters in the novel! like am i really supposed to believe that jules is this radiant “interesting” person ??? also the title & first 50 pages or so are very misleading in making you think this will be a book about a group of people when in reality it’s about the most selfish, superficial character in the world and how all these other people revolve around her.

DENNIS DESERVED BETTER!

I put off reading this book for a long time; I knew a lot of people who loved it, but I read some negative reviews and it’s a long book. I really liked it. It could’ve stood some editing, and nothing particularly exciting “happens”, but it doesn’t need to: it’s just regular people, thrown together in adolescence, and then it traces their lives through middle age in completely relatable ways. I found myself looking forward to reading it each day, which is always a good sign.

The writing was excellent and interesting, unlike the Interestings themselves. Somehow, I was still able to enjoy this book and the complex relationships in it despite feeling uncomfortable with the characters, whose outlooks on life drove me nuts. While reading, I mostly just worried for and rooted for Dennis at the same time. Also, now that I think about it, do I even remember what happened in this book?

I almost didn't read this because I haven't liked any of the other Meg Wolitzer books I've read, which I'm now starting to blame on the fact that I listened to them. Anyway, I'm glad all of my friends read it first and loved it because then I couldn't resist reading it and I'm so glad I did! I was engrossed from beginning to (spoiler alert: sad) end.

It took me a while to be invested in this one but the characters developed beautifully as the book spanned the decades. Wolitzer writes with a delicate subtlety and nuance and it was worthwhile sticking with it until the emotional ending
