Must read. If this doesn’t ignite a fire under the ass of white readers (*raises hand*) to use their privilege to amplify the plight of injustice of POC then you are doing something wrong. It’s a story that feels so familiar it’s hard to think of it as pure fiction, but it is as heartfelt as it is gritty and as uplifting as it is infuriating.

Wow, dieses Buch war echt krass. Man vergisst als weiße Person im Alltag leider viel zu oft, was für ein Privileg das ist, weiß zu sein und wie wichtig es sich, sich dem bewusst zu sein.

סיפורה הקשה והמרגש של סטאר, נערה בת 16 שחיה בשכונת "גטו" שחורה ולומדת בבית ספר פרטי שרוב תלמידיו לבנים. סטאר מצויה במשבר זהות: בשכונה מכירים אותה "כבת של מו מהמכולת" ובבית הספר היא מנסה לא להתנהג כרגיל כדי לא להחשב "הבחורה מהגטו", יש לה חברות קרובות שלא מבקרות אותה בביתה וחבר לבן, שאוהב מוזיקה שחורה. משפחתה, על אף מורכבותה, היא משפחה של אנשים ישרים ועובדים (אביה אסיר משוקם הוא בעל מכולת, אימה אחות, דודה שחיי בשכונה טובה יותר הוא שוטר) אבל חלקים אחרים במשפחתה, מצויים ביחסים עם כנופיות של סוחרי סמיםץ ואז לילה אחד היא נוסעת עם חבר ילדות בשם קאליל, ושוטר לבן עוצר אותם ויורה בחבר. סטאר צריכה להתמודד עם הטראומה ומנסה בכל כוחה להביא צדק לקאליל ולהשאר נערה רגילה.
מאחר שהספר מסופר בקולה ומעיניה של נערה בת 16 הוא מרגיש כמו רומן נעורים, זה קצת תרגיל כדי להקל את התכנים הבאמת קשים שיש בו. אישית אני פחות אוהב סיפורים בגוף ראשון ועל אף שהתרגום מצוין (כולל הסלנג והדיבור השגוי) אין לי ספק שהיה עדיף לקרוא באנגלית.
מעבר לכך, זהו ספר מרגש ואפילו חשוב, רגע בחיים שמאפשר להסתכל על העולם מעיני האחר ולי זה עזר להבין מעט על להיות המשמעות של להיות לבן פריביליגי שהמערכת מכוונת כלפיך ואיך מרגיש מי שלא.

When reading this book around the time of the George Floyd protests, one might stop to think 'wow, this is eerily similar'. This is the book that should never have needed to be written, and yet is hard-hitting with truth and relevance to today's society.
Starr's voice was powerful and engaging, the narrative delivered heartbreak, fear, destruction, injustice and prejudice in a way that makes a boulder sink into your stomach, realising that this is the reality of Black America and police brutality. Realising how fucked up the world we live in is, and how much privilege falls upon people who are not a minority.
This book is not a light-hearted or easy read by a long shot. It deals with themes of trauma, grief, death, police brutality, gang violence, and racism. However, it also deals with a very strong and (forgive me, Starr) brave young woman who uses everything she has been through to rise to the occasion of a fight that she inherited just because of who she is, because of the colour of her skin.
Everyone should read this book with an open mind and heart. It is real, raw, relevant, powerful and page-turning. And, while you read it, if you're not a person of colour, if you have the privilege of white skin, don't just look at this as a work of fiction. Realise that this is the reality, and educate yourselves to speak up against racism and police brutality.
