I don't know how this book, which was published five years ago, just hit my radar and I was convinced it was new. But I figured out pretty quickly it wasn't, given the timeframe of these interviews.

This is a really powerful look at the people who lived in the Chicago projects. I grew up hearing about them on the news, the mythology surrounding them, and it was really worthwhile to hear the stories of those who lived there. A wide array of experiences and attachments to those homes are showcased, and this should be valuable reading for anyone who has an interest in Chicago history, race in Chicago, and would make for some companion reading to EVICTED.

The appendices and notes at the end are A+++.

“I’m coming to the conclusion now with CHA and even with this country today: the laws they make is not the laws for us, the laws they make are to be exercised on us. Expediently.

One of my biggest fears, you know, is gun rights laws. CHA tenants can’t have a gun in their apartments. The homeowners, they can have these guns. What if the homeowners turn out to be the people like this guy who did the shooting in Aurora, Colorado? How am I supposed to protect myself? Just grab a frying pan and stand beside my front door and hope?” (204)

this book is a compilation of narratives written by individuals who lived in public housing projects in Chicago, predominantly in the south and west sides. these housing developments were torn down and hundreds of families were displaced. these are stories written by these people whose lives were negatively impacted by these demolitions done by our city.

It was really informative, especially as someone who is from the north side. I have really been enjoying books about Chicago’s history and other books about the people in my city. I definitely recommend reading if you’re local!
