When Light Yagmi finds a notebook, he quickly realizes that it belongs to a Shinigami, a god of death. Whosever name he writes in the book, they will die. However, that comes with a few caveats, such as needing to know the name and face of the person he is writing about. But when he starts killing convicted criminals, the police and mysterious investigator are on to him. Now, it's a thrilling game of chess to find out who captures who in this classic tale of morality and duplicity.
I'm excited to get into this and find out what happens next!

ugh this series is just SO GOOD. When I originally read the black edition bind-up of volumes 1&2, I gave the whole thing 4.5/5, 9/10-- basically the highest rating I could give it without giving it 5/5. I eventually decided to change it to 5/5 (i think lol), and it's sat there ever since.
And yet, reading this, diving back into the story? Easy 5/5 stars. No question. Which is interesting because I rarely to never(?) give a single/non-bind-up volume of a manga 5/5 stars solely due to it being such a tiny fraction of any given story. (That said, I'm also re-thinking how exactly to rate manga because maybe I just need to rate manga differently altogether?? idk).
Anyway, diving back into this was an absolute DELIGHT. We've barely even seen L & I'm so excited to get to re-read about him bc he's one of my favorite characters of all time. Very hype to continue this re-read!

I absolutely loved the concept of giving a moody over-stressed teenager the ability to kill, along with a creepy demon thingy that's unexpectedly adorable at times, and watching the drama ensue. I thought this series was clever and witty.

This was one of the first anime I stumpled upon, way to start in the genre if I say so myself.
So this volume, I'd forgotten how truly inhinged Light is. It takes him all of five days to go from "this might be fake" and "This is bad and would make me a horrible person/murderer" to "I WAS BORN TO DO THIS! I AM GOD". Then it takes him maybe one or two days to go from "just criminals" to just killing who he thinks is L, because L pissed him off and hurt his ego. It's kind of funny, but also scary. Then of course there's the fact that he's also the king of eugenics. It's one thing to kill criminals (not the greatest, especially not when power is given to one person), but then he starts in on the whole "rotten people" and people who he doesn't think deserve to live. So that's really something.
