An excellent meditation on how toxic masculinity forms and is reinforced. I liked the part where she talks about how she is also afraid of women because of the times when women encouraged or dismissed misogynist actions. She also deconstructs the idea of a "good man" essentially creating a fictional caricature that can not exist in real life. The text mourns the loss of opportunity and freedom caused by fear/anxiety derived from misogyny and calls on the reader to actively analyze their own actions in trying to break free of this fearful cycle.

I loved the reflections this short non-fiction brought. I just would have wished it was longer and had more essays.

Finally, someone put it into words.

This is a masterful essay, really challenging and upsetting to read (check trigger warnings for SURE), and full of quotes that I've been wanting to yell at people for a really, really long time. Big recommend.

This hits personally for me over and over and over again. I love Vivek’s prose, her brutality, and her introspection of herself as she works through how she has, always has, been shaped by the power of men. As someone who didn’t come out as trans until 28, almost 30 like Vivek, I think about this a lot, and seeing someone else think about it is both refreshing and saddening. Again, this is something we just need more of.

Reading this as I watch the world needlessly debate and harass Imane Khelif and Lin Yu Ting's participation in women's boxing. I yearn for a world without the gender binary; I am terrified to learn that I cannot remotely imagine it.

she does it again! I think Shraya is one of my fav authors. This would be a good primer for understanding trans women's lives, but also does a good job exploring masculinity in such a short and occasionally funny way. Literally read it in like an hour I loved it

“But your fear is not only hurting me, it's hurting you, limiting you from being everything you could be. Consider how often you have dismissed your own appearance, behaviours, emotions, and aspirations for being too feminine or masculine. What might your life be if you didn't impose these designations on yourself, let alone on me?”
