This is very fun. I read the whole thing in one go. In signature Gingell style, a lot of things are implied, which hooks me even more because I'm dying to know all the secrets. Anyway, I'm moving on to the next few books. I'm so curious about Pet, her parents' deaths and the house.

So good!

Hahaha. Oh man. I loved this. Clean, great dialogue, wonderful characters, fascinating plot line, and very fun. Pet is awesome and the psycos are such fun.

This wasn't hugely my cup of tea. It felt....very disconnected at times to the point of near incoherence. Having said that I liked Pet, and I also grew to really like her psychos. I'm probably going to read the next book and see if it is a bit more coherent. It's a different enough story that I want to give it another chance.

Having said that, my sort of "meh" response to this is clearly out of the norm. Give it a read and see what you think

I think someone told me that they enjoyed this series and the synopsis is weird enough that I had to pick it up. And wow for most of the book I was so confused -- most of what I've read has me confused, to be honest. Yet, I'm addicted to this series. I finished book 1 thinking "wtf did I read and do I really want to read more?" while immediately downloading and starting the next book. 3 days later I've caught up in the series and I"m dying for more.

There are so many questions I want answered still and depending on how things end this could be one of my favorite series. Characters are fantastic! I adore the pouty Korean vampire who is an asshole, but hilarious in the same breath. The characters are super interesting and I like them, which helps get me through confusing moments.

I cannot wait for this series to continue on!

I quite liked how this book really took its time, and I liked the way it handled the warping of reality. The slow build means that there's loads of things that are unclear still at the end of it, but that is not a bad thing. The relationship between the main character and the three supernatural guys seems a bit weird to me. She's not really scared much, which is helped by them seeming to talk more about not caring for her than actually not caring for her. Maybe it rubs me the wrong way because we don't yet know much of the society the 'psycho's' come from, but I don't super believe that the main character ever believed the threat they pose or if I should believe it. Either way, she turns out to be super great and helpful and therefore worthy of keeping around. But it would have been more interesting to see what would have happend if she would have been allowed to be scared or mess up or be irrelevant.

This was a somewhat interesting one.
It used most of the stereotypical urban fantasy tropes but it just didn't feel like your run of the mill UF story.
The pacing was... weird and the story was a bit all over the place. Apart from a few boring sections, the weird construction made the story somehow refreshing.
After reading lots of UF and PNR I am at a point where even if I am not able to actually guess the plot (like who the perpetrator is) I can guess what story section comes next and what purpose it will have.
I am attuned to the typical pattern of story segments which in itself makes even well-written books somehow boring and predictable in a way sometimes.
I read/listen to books mainly because I need something that occupies my mind so it doesn't wander to dark places so having a break in the story-building 101 was very refreshing even tho one might objectively rate it as inferior.

The general tone is lighthearted but there are a few heavier sections every now and then as well.
I could connect well with the mc and the reasoning was surprisingly sound and personalities consistent considering how meandering the story progressed.
The conclusion made the plot feel a bit pointless but this is not really a plot-focused story anyway. It is more about experiencing the journey alongside the mc in a fascinating world and interesting circumstances.

I can not in good conscience rate this higher than 3 stars from a more objective viewpoint but my personal enjoyment rating is a good 4 stars for sure.

Whichever way you slice it, the day started out bad and plunged into a free fall of awful.

When you get up in the morning, the last thing you expect is to see a murdered guy hanging outside your window. Things like that tend to draw the attention of the local police, and when you’re squatting in your parents’ old house until you can afford to buy it, another thing you can’t afford is the attention of the cops.

Oh yeah. Hi. My name is Pet.

It’s not my real name, but it’s the only one you’re getting. Things like names are important these days. And it’s not so much that I’m Pet. I’m a pet.

A human pet: I belong to the two Behindkind fae and the pouty vampire who just moved into my house. It’s not weird, I promise—well, it’s weird, yeah. But it’s not weird weird, you know?

I wondered if this was what it would have been like to have an older brother; reasonable and kind of murderous.

Considering the high rating, and the mention of vampires and fae, I had high hopes for this one. But honestly, the reason I stopped reading it is because...I can't bring myself to care. Despite a murder kicking this off, there isn't any tension in trying to find the murderer because it didn't involve Pet, so why would Pet care?

That's what the fae and vampire are investigating...except they don't particularly strike me as very vampire- or fae-like. But there's no stakes mentioned on why they need to investigate. And their presence heralds the arrival of weird things...like mini scarecrows with hands coming out of walls.

But even that doesn't scare Pet. Nope, she kicks the guy's sword back to him without him being the wiser and goes back to her waitress job.

They finally discover she's camping in her house that they took over...except that doesn't really mean much either. The only thing that's remotely interesting is the fact that she's apparently a weird sort of null that dampens a vampire's sense of smell and she can obtain a dryad that's alluded to being a huge thing except she just took it off a shelf.

But even then...why do I care? DNF @44%.

I don't see what everyone sees in this one. Is it just me?

Really mixed feelings. The Pet thing is just never going to rub me the right way, and although the things-not-adding-up aspect is apparently intentional, it also neither builds nor resolves in a satisfying way. (In my notes I rated it **/*** but as I didn't really consider not finishing it I went with the higher rating.)
