I LOVED this book! If you love a good fairy tale then this is for you! It did get a bit slow at times, but I greatly enjoyed this book!

Edit 2021- Reading this book 11 years after I read it the first time was not the best idea. This is definitely for younger readers and reading it as a 20 something was not as enjoyable to say the least. The characters were kind of annoying especially the princess.

Hale wrote what my younger self craved in fiction, and I'm finding my current self craves those things, too. A mystical setting, strong/complex characters, lovely thoughts sprinkled throughout the story, questions that make me keep reading because I must know the answers, even a little non-mushy love mixed in. This book pleased me so much. A few times the mystical setting got a little tiring (so many gods over so many weird things, it was hard to keep them straight), but most of the time it was just right for me.

Also can someone find me a prince like Khan Tegus because he genuinely made my heart flutter and I'm in my twenties

it's always so satisfying to finally read something that's been on my to-read list since 2007. :/
(in this case, it was also satisfying because i really liked the book.)

after losing her family, dashti finds work as a lady's maid. unfortunately, her lady is about to be locked in a tower for seven years for refusing to marry a nasty man. dashti joins lady saren in the tower, figuring she'll at least be fed for seven years. but when rats (and saren) start eating more than their fair share, dashti knows they won't make it seven years. eventually she breaks them out and they journey to the country of saren's childhood love, where they work unrecognized as kitchen maids in his home. but war is coming, and saren's life is in danger. also, dashti is in love with a man who is already engaged, and thinks she is someone she's not. can she find a way to save the country, saren and herself?

good stuff. i want to read all of shannon hale's books.

I hated the first half of this book, but then it got good! And so many things to think about. I love the ending.

Fiction book I read for book club. Interesting read with loyalty as the main theme. A sergeant who is loyal to her female master and gets locked up in a tower with her because of it.

This was one of the sweetest books I have ever read! I loved the ending and seeing the character development of the MC.
