Well developed story of three life long friends. The bond unbreakable. The narrator was quirky. I enjoyed picturing the little town with the descriptions that were told. At first I wasn't too into this story but by the end I was really enjoying the story. Takes place in a little town in Montana. It also gives the reader a little mystery and a twist or two.

I have now read all of Sandra Dallas' books, and this one was by far my favorite. I loved reading about Effa Commander, Whippy Bird, May Anna and the rest of the gang. They're such a fun bunch.

This book is about Effa Commander and Whippy Bird getting out the true story about the lives of their two best friends Marion Street (May Anna) and Buster Midnight. May Anna grew up to be a famous Hollywood starlet and Buster a champion boxer. This is mainly their tale, but we also get to learn about Effa and Whippy.

Hollywood has tarnished the reputation of Buster Midnight after a grizzly murder involving he and May Anna, and Effa and Whippy Bird are tired of it. So they've decided to 'set the record straight' and let everyone know the real Marion Street and Buster Midnight. How they grew up, what they were like and the relationship between all of them. And it's quite a story!

This is a really hard book to put down. If you're a fan of Ms. Dallas you'll LOVE this story. I was very sad to see it end. I really recommend this book, and only hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

This is Dallas's first novel, and already I see her gift for creating characters that leap off the page and into your heart. Effa Commander, Whippy Bird and May Anna (a/k/a/ Marion Strut) are vividly drawn. And, of course, there is a murder, and conflicting confessions for the reader to sort through.

I've enjoyed Sandra Dallas in the past, and had to read this one now that I live in Montana. It is the story of a Montana girl turned into a Hollywood scandal in the glory days of Hollywood, and a rich picture of Butte. But it is most of all a story of the lifelong friendship between three women, through all the pains and joys of life.

A cute story of a close cirlce of friends from Montana. Heart-ache, of course. Plenty of forgiveness, too.
Borrowed on Hoopla through JCPL.

Listening length seven hr, 26 min

I need to amend the four stars with "for a light entertaining read whose characters grow on you as the story progresses." Could not resist trying a story with main characters named Effa Commander and Whippy Bird.

What is it with backwoods-y novels and people having weird-ass names? And it's not enough that the names are weird--they say the full name every time they address someone. It's like, "Me and ol' Purple Shoe went down to the picture show with 32 cents to see Stinky Jones and Shirley Bologna. Shirley Bologna said that it was hotter than a hyena sitting on a griddle down at the burger joint on a Friday in July. Stinky Jones just told her to hush up so we could listen to the show. Purple Shoe reached down and held my hand and I felt happier than when Birdie McBiscuits found her old pearl earrings in the mineshaft after the 4th of July picnic when Tugly Stevies blew up his left ear trying to shoot roman candles at Ms. Porkchop's old cat."

I say all this to say: meh. I keep going out of genres I would normally read just to see if I find something I like. I haven’t. I guess I just know what I like.

A great book with down to earth characters. It takes place in Butte, Montana and Hollywood, CA. 3 women friends since age 5 grow up and while one becomes a movie star legend the ties that bind them together endure through WWII to old age, through love and one single act of violence. Both the female and male characters in this book are strong. Great read.
