Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits by David Wong

I find books by David Wong to range from humorous to hilarious. Futuristic Violence and Fancy suits fit the bill, but the amount of misogyny, even if societal satire, was draining and made me lower my rating. The middle third had me wishing our main character would suddenly transform into a Mary Sue and save herself from all the helplessness and omit needing other characters around to rescue her. However, her sarcasm-in-the-face-of-danger and love of Stench Machine endeared me to her, Wong's butt jokes amused me to no end, and now I'm wondering if this will turn into a series.

Did anyone else feel like Tabula Rasa was the horrible city-child of San Francisco and Vegas? Bleh. No thanks. I was getting "The Circle" (by Dave Eggers) vibes from the Blink feeds....

While I love the John Dies At the End universe, it was cool to see that he could apply the off-the-wall antics to other characters and environments. Had me literally laughing out loud several times, which I think is something we all need and definitely not easy to do. Recommended to anyone who's a fan of Wong/Pargin's previous material.

The best description for this is a wild, quirky ride. The main character was my fave part. She was witty and resilient and smart!! She really anchored the chaotic narrative. The story's found family element is heartwarming and adds depth to the zany futuristic setting, which added a lot of grounding to the story. However, the ending feels rushed and somewhat unsatisfying, but this could be because it’s a series so can’t knock it too much! Despite this, the novel's unique humor and engaging characters make it a fun read!

I’ll be keeping on with the series but this one is an oddball for sure

There was just the one fancy suit. The violence was only futuristic if you're not used to reading actual science fiction. I guess.

This is not the Wong of John and David Get Up to Stuff in a disgusting, hilarious way. This is Wong, editor of Cracked, super-cereal about Making a Point. About what, I'm not sure. There's some feminism in there, for sure. Main character Zoe is what Wong seems to think women think is relateable. To that end there's little description of her, other than that she's short, has large breasts, and dark hair with blue streaks in her bangs. She's a cat lady in training, really likes basketball and is Over Your Shit. Take that, patriarchy! There's also some kind of political critique, but I can't figure out if it's pro- or anti-libertarian or Libertarian or if maybe he got a bit ahead of himself and wanted to go full Anarcho-Capitalist and all his fight and bluster just gave out while he was working on the technicalities of "futuristic" part of futuristic violence.

As works go, there were some great secondary characters. I'd love to read more about Will and Andre.

I laughed out loud a few times. And I was curious about a few of the twists. In the end, though, not recommended.
