Wow! Great novel. Only drawback is that there isn't much of an end. It truly is part of a "duet," and now I've got to get the second half of the duet! A review on the back made reference to The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials) series, and I thought that was a good point: it had kind of that same feeling to it, though without the controversy and offense to Catholics and perhaps other believers in general. Had an atmosphere of otherworldliness mixed with the real world, all set in the early 1900s in perhaps the New Zealand area, since the author is from around there (I think...), but not really clear where it would be. The characters really elicit our concern and sympathy. I liked the bits of fantasy elements in the story, but it didn't necessarily read like a typical "fantasy" novel. Looking forward to resolving the "mysteries" of this set in the next book.

I had a hard time rating this book because I almost hated the whole thing. The beginning is dead boring and I didn't care about it one bit. But...the last couple of chapters are really good. In fact they hooked me enough that I am already reading the second book and thoroughly enjoying it. So I say read it, just be prepared for a wicked slow beginning and middle.

"Dreamhunter" by Elizabeth Knox starts off a bit slowly, but by the end I was really hooked. Knox has created quite a world in Dreamhunter. Dreamhunters are the celebrities of society -- people with a special gift who are able to enter a mysterious land called simply the Place, "catch" dreams while sleeping there, and then bring them back to share with others. Dreams are performed in special opera houses, where the dreamcatcher sleeps upon a central bed while the patrons sleep in chambers lining the balconies, viewing the dreamcatcher's dreams. Cousins Laura and Rose are the daughters of the two biggest dreamcatcher stars, and at age fifteen are old enough to Try to enter the Place. When Laura's father disappears, Laura begins to discover a sinister underbelly in the world of dreamcatchers, and sets off on her own quest to both find her father and expose the hidden secrets. Dreamhunter is a coming of age story mixed with a compelling fantasy tale, with more than a few strands of the Golem story mixed in as well. I'm already reading the sequel, so I would rate this book overall as a success.

Dream hunters are individual with special gifts: the ability to go to a special place, catch larger than life dreams and relay them to audiences in the magnificent dream palace. This story is about a relationship between Laura, her cousin her father and Aunt and Uncle. The Dreams the dreams that are caught, they way they live and the secrets that the corrupt members of the government are hiding. I enjoyed this book because of the fascination I have with dreams. What would it be like if we could control our dreams or the dreams of others? If you could go someplace and "catch" a dream, would it be a happy one or a nightmare? What if you had to replay that dream over and over until it was gone? How would you feel?? Read and find out.

Eh... Different premise. Didn't finish, though.

Really enjoyed this. Must read before "Dreamquake", which is the conclusion of the tale.
