A promising beginning but the entire tone of the story changed about 80% in.

Jane Jenkins is the stereotype rich young party girl and after finding her mother murdered she is arrested, convicted and sent to prison. After she spent 10 years in prison she gets set free due to the evidence used to convict her was found to be "mishandled" by the police department. However she really isn't sure what happened to her mother at all so she decides to go find out, all the while trying to hide from the media who want to know her every move and believe her to be guilty. Now Jane is definitely the kind of stuck up sarcastic brat that you just have to hate but all the while you're still rooting for her to find out the truth in hopes that she isn't actually guilty. You also get that creepy small town close knit scenery and I always love that in a mystery. I enjoyed this a lot it was really fast paced and the little cut scenes in between chapters of interviews and news articles was a nice touch. The books ends with out answering some questions I had but overall I still enjoyed it.

My only complaint is that several characters' ages/generations were a bit slippery for my brain. The amorphous generational lines may have been deliberate. Good story.

I'm surprised most reviewers have negative comments about the narrator's voice in this book. It was the only part I actually liked. Sometimes that snarky, bitchy, funny voice can feel forced, but it worked for me here and was even funny at times.

That said, nothing else really worked. Most of all, the book was boring. There's hardly a plot and it moves along so slowly I took forever to finish this book. The characters are barely fleshed out--I felt like I had no idea how old anyone was, what they looked like and, more importantly, why on earth they were doing the things they did.

Then the ending came and there was no suspense and then ... it just ended and I was left with all the same questions I'd had throughout the book.

Started off intriguing enough -- girl hates mom, mom ends up murdered, girl's name written in blood by mom using blood from her bullet wound, girl spends 10 years in jail only to be released on an evidence technicality. And all in the first few chapters! I greatly wanted to get into this book, but I have to admit I got a bit lost in the middle. Way too many secondary characters that were somehow related and difficult to keep track of. What this book needs? One of those family trees on the inside cover! I enjoyed the main character's dry wit and shelter-dog mentality, but some of the twists and turns seemed out of the blue and the suspense is spread too thin. Great ending, though -- irony at its finest!

Everyone has some idea about what separates us from every other animal, about what makes us humans so fucking special. God, language, cheese, that sort of thing. But you might not have heard of this one: What makes us different is the fact that we’ll voluntarily step into a locked cage with a predator.
