Too little thought is really put into the "crazies" and Kyle was just a disappointment as a threat. Honestly yeah the big attack on the group would be horrifying if we saw how it occurred, some POV scenes detailing what happened, and maybe I don't know some kinda reaction to what actually happened. Like I can't be the only person wondering why there were no scenes really showing people's reaction toward what just happened. Also, classic Laymon (aka Richard Kelly) but half of the book is trying to be bad titillating soft-core porn but everyone already knows that going in, but why is the supposed romance between Darcy and Greg progressing so fast? They are proclaiming their love and racing to start boning from pretty much the get-go and it's strange as hell.

Once I got into the premise of the monster reveal, I was no longer interested. Laymon is not for me.

A group of tourists take an tour of underground caverns named Mordock’s Cave. Then a fire in the hotel above traps them with a power failure, which is no reason to panic. The tour guides decide to look for another exit and when they break through into another cave, they unleash the psycho cannibals that live in the dark.

This was a creepy and wonderfully disturbing book and you can put yourself in the position of the scared tourists. Amongst the group is creepy Kyle, son of the hotel owner, both of whom are responsible for the rape of countless young women and whose bodies they feed to the cannibals below. He knows what is out there in the dark but he lets the chaos happen to cover his attempts to rape a young girl on the tour with him.

The reactions of the different tourists to the crisis are just what you would expect in this situation and it was a real rollercoaster ride of horror and gore. Lovely!

A catastrophic power failure has trapped a group of tourists deep in Mordock’s cave, a spectacular natural wonder. As the group’s guide, Darcy tries to keep everyone calm the lift shafts explode in flames and they realise they need to find another way out through a walled up part of the cave. But it was sealed up for a reason and there are some things that need to stay locked away!

Laymon is an acquired taste and not for everyone, the motifs of sex and death are very closely linked in all of his stories. In this one, an act of violence and revenge long ago has created a brutal bloodthirsty foe. Told through dual points of view, those underground trapped in darkness and those above ground witnessing the events that led to the power going out.

Ultimately this is the story of two parents desperate to get to their children. Chris to save her daughter Darcy the tour guide and Hank to rescue his teenage daughter Paula. All tied in to the murderous history of the Murdock covering up decades of missing women. I loved it!
