I didn’t love this book. i think it was well written but the pace of the romance kind of drove me crazy. i love a slow burn but it felt like there was barely any angst or longing because too much was happening in the plot to focus that much on the romance. i think this book would’ve benefitted greatly by an additional 100 pages or by making the romance the main plot point since it felt like it was secondary. the misgendering of the love interest in the first half of the book really irked me. i understand they hadn’t come out to the main character yet, but i didn’t enjoy reading 150 pages misgendering a non-binary person. i think the author could’ve tweaked things so easily to make that not happen. all they had to do is have ray tell simone their pronouns right away or just slightly later than first meeting as a sign that they trust simone.

Please keep in mind I am a cis-gender reader/reviewer, make sure to seek out reviews from trans/enby readers.

What a gem! Considering I don't really like food/kitchen/baking centered books OR the grumpy/sunshine trope in the romance genre (and this has both), I still enjoyed it greatly so that says something about the strength of the book and writing!

This is my first contemporary rom com book with a nonbinary love interest (who comes out mid-book) and it digs into some uncomfortable stuff for the cis mc. I liked how much was in conversation in the narrative. It also does get into the love interest's top surgery and recovery so if that is something that could be triggering to you, take care with the read.

Ultimately, it's very sweet and light (while also tackling some important topics) and I will totally be reading the companion which follows Simone's roommate Luna's love story!!

“You look like you,” she finally managed to say. Ray’s smile curved. “That a good thing?” Simone nodded. “The best thing.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

CHEF’S KISS is like a behind the scenes look into your favorite cooking show. This book is a slow burn when it comes to the romance, but there’s so much friendship building and trust development throughout the plot I truly didn’t feel like I was missing anything. I did my usual bit of squealing, kicking my feet, blushing, and even jumping for joy over Ray and Simone. I’m elated that they get both get everything they’ve ever dared and feared to dream.

Simone is an anxious Type A pastry chef whose life is turned upside down when she’s tasked with becoming a video content creator alongside Ray, a bubbly laid-back kitchen manager. When Ray comes out as nonbinary at work, Simone has to decide what her future looks like—the job of her dreams or the person of her dreams?

🍻 Workplace romance
🥧 Grumpy/Sunshine
🍻 Bisexual pastry chef
🥧 Nonbinary kitchen manager
🍻 Hurt/comfort post surgery
🥧 ONE! BED! TROPE!!!!
🍻 Slow burrrnnnnnnn
🥧 YEARNING and longing and pining!!!

  • I thought this book was adorable! It made me cry at the end.
  • It makes me sad that there is so much hatred for people being themselves. I honestly don't understand it.
  • I loved all the food in the story. It really made me want to go cook up a feast- but that would've been a waste of food.
  • Simones's character growth is well-written and I really enjoyed it. I liked the diversity of the characters as well.
  • Ray. What can I say- they're perfect and I just want to give them a hug.
  • The slow burn ALMOST killed me but it was definitely worth it in the end.
