I thoroughly enjoyed reading Furiously Happy, but by the end, I was left a bit deflated, which is the only reason why this is a 4 star review rather than a 5. I felt that it lacked something of the Jenny that I have come to love, and made me want to reread Let's Pretend This Never Happened. It's a fantastic book of its own right, but comparitively ever so slightly a let down.

Very funny, and good insight into mental illness. More references to taxidermy and dead animals than I originally anticipated.

Everyone (but me) seems to adore Lawson.
A few years ago, I tried to read her blog on the recommendation of a friend. Mmmm, no thanks.
I tried to read her book _Let's Pretend_, but DNF'd. Not for me.
I made it through this one by skimming at times, and to be truthful, I did laugh two or three times. Don't ask me which parts, because I don't remember.
That about sums it up for me: the book is forgettable, and that makes me sad.

This the second Jenny Lawson book that I’ve read. The first was Let’s Pretend This Never Happened. Both books were very funny and witty. Reading them felt like listening your manic friend ramble on for, oh, 10 or 12 hours non-stop. Actually, it was pretty exhausting. But, it was compelling to be privy to the inner mind of person diagnosed as a “high-functioning depressive with severe anxiety disorder, moderate clinical depression, and mild self-harm issues that stem from an impulse-control disorder”. And that’s just the beginning of it.

This brutally honest memoir took me on a emotional roller coaster ride. For most of it, I laughed at her foibles right along with her. But, for some of it, I cried for her pain.

2017 review:

I enjoyed the parts where she talked about her mental illnesses, but the humor felt very "LOL RANDOM" to me and that's the kind of humor that for me works better in short formats and not in a longer book. Still a good read, and I would recommend it to everyone who thinks it sounds interesting.

If you’d like to live inside the head of mentally ill woman, (albeit a funny woman) for like 8 hours of your life, then this is the book for you.

If that doesn't sound like fun to you, may advice is: run.

I’ve wanted to read ”let's pretend this never happened” for a long time and I didn't realize prior to starting this book that they’re written by the same author.

After reading Jenny’s second book I don't know if i’ll give the first a shot. Mainly because this book has almost no discernable objective. I don't need ”tiddy” (this is a book about mental illness after all, I get it) and I don't even need cohesive necessarily, I just want to know what in the world i’m supposed to learn from listening to the ramblings of someone who... Aside from her mental illness, clearly likes that sound of her voice a bit too much....

(is this book considered ”Humor?” I have no idea.)

I enjoyed a few of her stories. But their only objective seemed to be to provide proof for how crazy she is. The entire book is her shouting ”see how crazy I am?! I am SO crazy!”

I think if there Is a message to be extracted from whatever it was that I just read, it’s that people with extreme mental illness CAN be happy. Furiously happy....

Unfortunately one can gather as much from the title... So i’m not entirely sure what the point of the rest of the book was. Then again i’m not mentally ill so maybe I just can't relate.

I have, however, turned into a bit of a softy when comes to reviewing books lately so i’m giving this one three stars even though, for me, it was probably more like a two-star read.

Jenny Lawson and all her taxidermied pets are my spirit animal.
