this feels like something very fresh and new on my bookshelf. i always forget how much i enjoy reading plays.
i very much enjoyed this one. it is full of pop culture references from ten years ago, full of swearing and slang and singing, but the characters felt so real, with dialogue that seemed to speak to me as i was reading it on the page.
highlights :
- debating which poo tanya had laid in - conclusion being badger.
- every character entering and telling ginger that he should have been there last night. brutal.
- the way the teenagers seem to genuinely care for this man, this drug dealing liar in the middle of the woods, going out of their way to protect him.
i can imagine just how funny it would be on stage (especially sections like the trivial pursuit cheating), all the ensemble work must be great.
a very good start to the second half of the tragedy module.

Don't understand the hype. Another straight white man tortured by the world. A lot of slurs and misogynistic. Surely there are better and more interesting stories to be told!

Have never seen a production, but am confident Mark Rylance’s portrayal of Rooster was one of the great stage performances of our time.

The whole play felt just on the edge of my experience - it brought back memories of going to fayres and country shows as a child, of warm summers in the coutryside, but contrasted it with a darker side of drugs, alcohol, underage sex, and the reality of the brutality of councils towards the houseless and traveller communities.
