Mild spoilers below...

I thought this was a cute fun read. I think I'm just not super into the insta-love trope. Them falling madly in love within a few weeks just didn't seem believable to me as it seems like the only time we see them together alone they are either talking about strategy or banging. That being said I loved the moments with both their families and D'Vaughn coming out to her family. A lot of times coming out stories tend to have sad endings or be long drawn out paths to acceptance for the parents and I liked that this one showed the more loving side but also discussed the issue of "knowing" and not saying anything.

I have to say I really struggled with all the mentions of D'Vaughn's nervous tick... I didn't need to hear about her "nibbling her bottom lip" or "chewing on her lip" or "sucking on her bottom lip" or "worrying her lip". Or Kris "freeing the abused lip" and "scolding her" for chewing on it. So many mentions of chewing on her lip that it made me a bit sick to my stomach lol. Not great for people with skin picking issues...

CW: brief mentions of weight loss/size, one scene involves public sex, mentions of the topic of infidelity, inner monologue of anxiety/second hand anxiety

Oh, man. I am so disappointed by this. I thought I would really like this book, and I've been waiting to read it since it came out, and had seen so many other people say they loved this. But the writing style was just not for me.

The humour didn't really work for me. There was one big Emotional Scene in each chapter, where D'Vaughn would usually end up crying, and it just got so tiring after a while - like every single chapter had a formula to it. Also a lot of bits that were done for banter reasons, that never really went anywhere. And of course the concept of the show was a bit hard to get fully invested into, because it just seemed so unrealistic as a concept.

I REALLY tried with this book. But then I got 70% through, and thought "maybe if I just skim-read this I can finish it today" and that's when I knew I shouldn't force myself to go any further.

You guys know I really do not enjoy romcoms yet I continue to try new ones all the time ( definition of crazy??) I’m happy to say I actually really enjoyed this one!

At the end of the book I think I may have been in love with Kris because hello, woman of my dreams?? D’vaughn’s character was difficult to relate to but I appreciated her growth through the story. Adding Kris’ biracial/bilingual family gave a really fun and wholesome element to the story and made Kris an even more well-rounded character.

I highly recommend this book to fans of romcoms that highlight themes of race and queerness!
