It was mostly.. porn which like not complaining but at times it felt like a man writing lesbians, the ending was good but overall not what I had hoped

288 pages of borderline-incestuous sexual fantasies being used as a metaphor for eating disorders ... šŸ˜¬šŸ˜¬yikes

The characters are bland and unlikeable, the writing style is pitifully dull, and the plot is essentially non-existant. Blatant insensitivity of the topics it covers aside, there is nothing enjoyable about this book. I knew this going in, I anticipated it to be bad, and yet my expectations were exceeded! I am simply dumbfounded by how horrendous this book was. I applaud Melissa Broder for her ability to make sex into something so violently unsexy. The "intimate" scenes read like something that would be right at home on wattpad. Never once in my time here on God's Green Earth have I thought the word "sludge" should be used when describing lesbian sex. I would add more awful quotes into this review, but I've blocked them out of my mind, and I feel no desire to go back and rediscover them. Absolutely egregious. I didn't think it could get worse than another of her novels, The Pisces, and yet here we are.

Felt like a mix between The Answers (Catherine Lacey) and Big Swiss (Jen Beagin). Short and concise. Hit home for various reasons - ā€œinterestingā€ mother-daughter relationship, mother wounds, body image, expression of gender in relation to women, men and the self.

An interesting read, not something Iā€™d probably find myself revisiting but something that was entertaining nonetheless.

I liked reading it but it did not feel super reflective of an actual eating disorder. Like in the end sheā€™s just, over it? Somehow?

This read like a colourful, pop tv show for young twenty-somethings. Overall entertaining.
The tropes and images in which the protagonist's issues and story progressed were very cliche though.

| Favorite Quote | My mother had never known me either, though it wasn't because I hadn't given her a chance. I'd given her a lot of chances. What was saddest was that she didn't seem to want to know me, not as I was on the inside. I wasn't even sure if she could grasp that I had an inside, that I was real. Sometimes it seemed impossible that she had ever given birth to me at all. Other times, it made perfect sense that I had lived inside her for so long. It explained why she could only see me as an extension of herself.

| My Review | Skimmed. Itā€™s weird, sad, a bit off-putting, and ends in disappointment. Very polarizing, you either love or hate this book!

Trigger Warning: ED and Body Image.
