4.25. I recently learned about my great-Uncle’s WW2 experiences and after doing some Internet sleuthing realized he was one of the downed airmen in Yugoslavia. He was part of the 40 airmen rescued in May 1944. Although he was a bit before the official Mission I felt like the rescue of these downed airmen and the acts of the Serbian people events he would have experienced firsthand. Imagine my surprise to see him listed as one of those rescued (J.L. Camara). also feel like my knowledge of the Balkans history is sorely lacking so this book also made me want to learn more.

This is a must read if you are interested in all WWII history as I am. I did not know this story of the rescue of over 500 US and Allied serviceman who had gone down over Yugoslavia during bombing runs. The author tells how the rural Yugoslavians treated the service man like heros, feeding them what little food they had and hiding them from the Nazis until a plan could be hatched to rescue them. The plan was to gather the service men together, build an air strip and fly cargo planes into enemy territory without clueing in the Nazis. Great book.

About the daring and almost movie-like rescue of 250 downed allied airmen in the balkans in WWII.

I was mainly reading this because it was a Christmas present, but I don't usually read non-fiction. The actual events were interesting but the author was trying to write as if it were fiction and it didn't work for me. Also, he repeats himself a lot, even in the same paragraph and it was kind of annoying.

I rated this book on my own experience but I would not say it’s accurate for those who enjoy these types of books
