This was a slow read for me because the writing style was just painful. Friends know that the way many women write books just isn’t my favorite style, so this is nothing new for me. The actual content was pretty good.
The first half focused a lot on friendship idolatry and sin issues, much of it being pretty repetitive. I think the first half could have cut out about half of the anecdotes and it wouldn’t have lost any of the substance.
The second half was much much better and focused more on what a healthy friendship should look like. There was a good amount of scriptural support for her points, which was also a bonus.

Needham does a great job explaining why what our culture calls friendship is actually not what God intended for friendship to be. Through much of the book, Needham argues that our culture glorifies friendship that replaces marriage and encourages singleness. She says if friendship is not founded on a common goal of furthering the Kingdom of God, its not friendship at all. We tend to look for earthly friendships that we hope will meet our needs and desires, rather than looking for friendships where we can meet the needs of others. Needham uses biblical friendship, focusing on the example of David and Jonathan, to further her point that friendship that honors God should be founded on a mutual loyalty to God and advancing His kingdom.

A worthy read on a subject lacking much attention from Christian authors: friendship. There were moments the language itself got repetitive and my attention lagged in a couple of chapters, but overall, the wisdom Needham offers is valuable.

This book has a great overall message, to not idolize our need for other relationships. And to look to God for our needs. I do feel in many spots this could have been communicated clearer though.

This book cut me so deep. It was like she was reading to me my life on friendship. I recommend that all Christians (and even non-Christians) should read this book, to see whether or not their friendship is truly a healthy one and helping others advance to God’s kingdom.

I wish I would have had this book when I was in highschool and college. It is such a unique book that portrays such a beautiful picture of what it is like to have healthy friendships. It is based on scripture and gives the reader a deeper hunger for the things of God. I believe this book is primarily for people of Christian heritage but has truths that are much more far reaching. I haven't read another book like it. Great read. Recommend to everyone.

The last few chapters of this book felt wise and applicable. And some of the truths and wake up calls were convicting as we read along. However, I felt we (read with a small group from church) had to really push through half the book to get there. Some of the advice in the beginning felt extreme, or like personal convictions that sometimes contradicted what she would later say about the Lord's design for friendship. I'm still thankful to have read it but am glad I read it with others to process along the way.
