I was amazed by this book. I loved that the author chose a third person perspective, but told from the viewpoint of the Alzheimer's patient. It really tapped into the emotions of this situation so beautifully. I cringed at the embarrassing situations that Alice found herself in, and definitely teared up at her brief moments of clarity towards the end of the book. Very touching, and I'm sure painful for those who have had to watch someone suffer through the disease, which I have not had to yet, fortunately.

This was my second time reading this novel. I had first read the eBook a year or two ago and felt like picking it back up to refresh my memory of this beautiful story. Alice is a successful professor at Harvard with three loving adult children and an equally successful husband. Her life is turned upside down when she learns she has early-onset Alzheimer's.I loved the way Genova weaves facts and education on the matter with these fictional family struggles. It is not an easy read in that there is a lot of emotion, and it makes you truly take stock of how you would handle the same situation if this were someone you loved or even yourself. I highly recommend this read, with the warning that you will cry and you will get angry, but it is all worth it.

If you know anything about early onset Alzheimer's, you know how this is going to go. Not uplifting, but interesting nonetheless to see how it plays out in a family in a different way than it would for a traditional Alzheimer's patient.

Would not recommend reading while battling third trimester pregnancy brain, as most of the memory tests I couldn't pass myself.

But otherwise, a quick read and interesting.

OK, so I recommended a book to a friend and she responded with this book. I was reluctant, let's face it a book about Alzheimer's disease was guaranteed to be sad if not an all out cry-fest. I checked it out at my library on Tuesday and despite a full-time job was finished by Thursday night. Wow! Very moving. I was completely engrossed and felt connected to this woman's journey into the depths of full on memory loss. Please read. As my friend said when recommending this, "everyone should read this, no matter what age." Having worked with people who have this disease, I thought I had an idea of what it might be like. I know my terror is real with regards to this disease, but after reading this I somehow take solace and I'm not sure why. Maybe because I know there are great people acting as caregivers to Alzheimer patients and that I have a loving family who I hope would act like Alice's daughters if I ever got this disease. My final thought is that I am so hopeful a cure to this disease will soon be found. Thank you Lisa Genova for your wonderful character and emotional attention to this frightening disease.
